This movie is a masterpiece
by Achan Singh on Aug 14, 2008 04:01 PM

This is the last straw. I have now lost all faith in movie reviews on Rediff.com.

Every indian should do himself a favor by watching this movie.
Cinema is not always entertainment.
Cinema is a medium. Through this medium, one can send out senseless "Sarkaye liyo khatiya" messages, and also give a lesson to a mass audience on where we are and where we ought to go.

Dharm, will force you to rethink and question your faith. And then you will know, what your dharm is.

DHANESH RAI
Rating
by DHANESH RAI on Dec 11, 2007 09:40 AM

i could not understand how the reviewer has rated this movie with 2.5 stars. has he himself seen the movie or have only heard about it from someone. this movie worth is nothing less to be rated than 5 stars. i am a great fan of quality cinema and i went to see this movie with my friends with no idea of what this movie is all about. comprising a gang of working bachelors all of 22-24 yrs of age with 12 Muslims, 3 Catholics, 4 Protestants, 1 Parsi, 2 Jain and me as only Hindu among them. Witnessing the powerof knowledge, rightfulness or Best real "Dharma" in the last 12 minutes when Pankaj Kapoor stops the mob and teaches them the meaning of dharma single handed with blood and death all around deviating them for the real dharma and conveys the message of the movie to every viewer.

i will not write anything more but i wud like to invite the reviewer to a small city known as Bhopal and ask any of my friends about the movie to understand what this movie is all about and how much to be rated.

and please come after going through the sloka that pankaj kapoor recited at the near end of the movie.

Prasanna.

Think Again

I am surprised with the inconsistency between the rediff rating and the tone of the review.
This movie deserves at least 4 stars.

This is not a movie for someone looking for mindless entertainment. But it sure is a slap across the face all those critics of "Bollywood" who feel that the Indian film industry is of a lower caliber than the western one.

The acting is First class - there are no weak performances. The message is powerful.

I disagree with the comment made by Mr.Vijayan about the so-called "glitches". What is the meaning of "Should have delved...???"
In fact, the beauty of the movie lies in the fact that it does not delve into the much-discussed and much-portrayed side of communal violence. It conveys a stronger message - that our concept of religion is limited by our ability (read INability )to grasp the fundamentals of the religious teachings.

Each person, regardless of religion, tries to extract a most convenient interpretation of its religious scriptures - instead of trying to understand the deeper, more subtle meaning. Our selfish motives and our ego is making us blind to the truth.

THAT is the one message of this movie. The heart of this movie.

It is a pity that even mindless films like Fool n Final and such like receive their fair share of audiences while very well made and intended movies like Dharm find takers only abroad. There is no doubt that the movie is fantastic on all counts and deserves to be watched and appreciated most by Indians, not people who live in another world (i.e., abroad).
Also, I would like to state what is purely my point of view, nothing personal, that there is a level of cinema achieved by a filmmaker when he can show you snippets from real life and leave it at that. Perhaps we are too used to a form of storytelling where everything is spoon-fed to us.
It is high time we started appreciating the nuances presented by the movie for what they are and not want a "story" out of them each time(with reference to the Hrishita Bhatt storyline).
