I dont think a Big brother show winner can make ur country proud or a british TV channel can insult ur country . do u think India is at the mercy of these people?.

Congrats Shilpa
by Adityo Gaine on Jan 30, 2007 07:58 AM

A victory is a victory is a victory! I was pretty shocked to read some of the comments in response to Shilpa's victory in Big Bro. Some refer to it as a silly programme while others speak of things like "spend money for the poor".

We have several game shows and reality shows in India as well. While we could congratulate the Abhijeet Sawants and the Harshwardhan Nawate's (first crorepati), why are we being miserly about our appreciation for Shilpa. She didnt vote for herself. The general public did....she won fair and square. It was a game and she won it....so Congrats to her.

She has made a name for her abroad....so what's wrong in that? Let's be happy for her. Its not that unless you make a name for yourself in social service, people should boo at you. We all have our competencies. She is model/actress and has won audiences in Britain by her poise//grace/beauty.....lets be happy for her.

I read a comment about her doing B-grade/trash movies. Have you guys heard of a certain movie called "Phir Milenge" where Shilpa's performance won her lots of accolades and critical acclaim?

Finally, for those who still won't be happy unless one is in social service......well Shilpa is an active AIDS activist and a PETA supporter.

Kudos to Shilpa!!

Shijo...this is such a cheap comment. I dunno if you have a real Indian roots, you cant even feel happy for a fellow Indian winning something and making the nation proud with ture sense of Indian culture and perseverence. I am pretty sure that the Pseudo Pro-hungry people like you must not be doing anything towards the poor and you are simply being jealous of someone's success as you must be a big loser in life yourself. However as a consolence award I will nominate you for this years Ramon Magsaysay award for being passionate towards the hungry people of the world...clap..clap..clap!

I do agree with all reply to this article. I wonder whats the problem to Mr.shijo after Shilpa's win? Atlest this whole episode proved again of CHEAP / INHUMAN mentality in certain part of the world even in 21st century! We can imagine how much our people are suffering due to such Racism in so called developed (really proper word?) country.

Shijo I wonder if u r pointing your fingers at urself when u refer to the hungry population in the country...In the many years I spent in the country I have noticed one thing that people notice this poverty in our country when they themselves are poor and for some reason they forget about the same, once bucks start flowing into their pockets....stop being an hypocrite man... and as far as shamelessness of shilpa goes its people like her, Aishwarya n all who give this global recognition to our country in their own way....If u cant assist dont resist!!!
I hope u n all those hypocrites like u manage to read this!!!

Shilpa the winner
by unni krishnan nair on Jan 30, 2007 12:16 AM  | Hide replies

Jody or no Jody. Racism or no Racism. Shilpa was destined to win BB. On the first day Shilpa appeared on BB show I received calls from my other Indian friends in UK to switch on TV and watch BB and to vote and make Shilpa the winner. Of course I was not watching the programme but has been following the developments since then. The Asian community in general and the Indian Community in particular was determined to clinch this issue in favour of Shilpa. A major chunk of the over 40000 protests of racism to the OffCom certainly has originated from Asians. And the Blacks always oppose the whites on Racist issues. Shilpa developed into a Mandela-like person amongst many of my Black colleagues.

And then what happened is just what happens in any Indian election. The votes of minorities like Asians and Blacks for Shilpa and the votes of Whites divided. Just an eye opener to what is going to happen in British elections in the years to come.

Shilpa won it ultimately. Well done. But the biggest winner is Channel 4. It wanted to increase its Asian viewers and it played the master card by roping in a Bollywood personality

Please read Mark Lawson's article on the Guardian. Why is no one talking about what happened during the live show. http://www.zimoz.com/zimo/user/sandy/1170123840218.postcard

Don't worry, people will always come up with a conspiracy theory. BTW, do you have a link to Guardian? The link you have posted is certainly not Guardian's site.

A message to all Indians and Shilpa Shetty
by Subin G on Jan 29, 2007 11:26 PM  | Hide replies

I feel no proud nor excited heareing this "Big News". How many of us had heard of Big Brother say, one month back? When was the last movie released starring Shilpa Shetty in the lead role, which made an impact in box office?. A well knit tactical move by Big Brother and Channel 4, to win Indian hearts and thus slowly enter the Indian arena - simply put that is it!!.The image of a completely shaken Shilpa sobbing on the first day, consoled by her housemate, the allegations which followed, the denials and apologies folowed by daily front page coverages....a well tailored drama which was intented to fool the viewers.

We would be proud of you Ms Shilpa Shetty, if you can donate at least 10% of the prizemoney you got (made public a sum of 100,000 GBP) for some noble cause, for the needful and the suffering in India. We would adore you as a role model if you can pay taxes on the amount you received to the government. We would love you with our hearts if you can provide single time meals daily to those street urchins who are malnourished and comes begging to you daily on a busy traffic junction. Further, if you would have stayed in one of the stinky slums in Dharavi for a single day, sans AC, proper food, proper clothes, or ventillation you would have been treated by the millions of common man in India as a Goddess(and she knows this lacks glamour and media attention)

Subin, I think you are getting confused here.
Does it matter anymore that no one had heard of Big brother one month back? The fact is that it is now a very well known program and winning that becomes a much bigger deal for Shipla also.
It is hard to tackle bullying(it was 3-4 against 1) and especially in a foreign land and among all unknown/culturally people. It is not for faint of heart to go into a place where you are different from anyone else. The fact she was sobbing should be taken in that context but I would not call her completely shaken. She came back pretty ok and her "Claim to fame.." line was a very good reply I think.

How do you know Shilpa will not be paying her taxes? You should know income earned abroad is not tax free! It gets taxed but where is complicated scenario. Could be UK or India or maybe differential of taxes..and the choice is not really in her hands. Maybe for some tax expert to comment on.
How do you know if she does take part in any charity or not? How would staying in stinky slum do anything?

Sorry Subin, but i differ with your thoughts on the issue.

Do you think Goody wanted to loose all her Modelling contract for some Channel 4 people. I doubt it.

What happened to goody was real and what happened out there was real. No Staged play, No Drama.

But the whole racial thing was blown out of propotion. Its a intense show, atleast for inmates. And emotional outburst here and there is always expected.

When politics gets involved it always ugly.

Anyway my i should still congratulate Shila. Its not an easy task for her either.

Shilpa deserves it
by Shikha on Jan 29, 2007 11:13 PM

I use to like shilpa because of her beauty but now after watching her in BB she proves to be a nice human being too, she has got lot of patience and class even if there was no racial row of BB she was the winner because she is a nice human being.
