Hey! guys, why make this such a big deal. When a beautiful movie like Lagan could not make it, how can a stupid movie like this make it?! Just in case you guys did not know it was not a movie from India, but the nomination said "Movie from Canada".... I guess its time for her to show case the good things in this religion and madamji the things you showed were in late 19th century, show how tolerant Hinduism is.

Lagaan was not Oscar worthy. Infact , i havent seen one hindi movie thats Oscar worthy. Seriously.

For starters , just compare the Oscar ceremony to the Filmfare awards...Its a comparison of class Vs Crass :-)

Uo have gotto be out of ur mind to make such a comment. Lagan was a typical Hindi movie with less masala nothing worthy of oscars. Just look at the oscar cateogory and lagan is nowhere near. Water is done is a very suttle way portraying the lives in 1930's. It was beautiful and well done and worthy to be considered for oscars. Its coz of people like all junk movies are expected to make it to oscar but in vain.

Yeah yeah, with a plagiarized script and a hopeless screenplay? Doesn't it tell us all something- that the standards of movie making in Canada are as bad as -if not worse then- their Indian counterparts?

why cant we make a Original Conceptual Indian Movie?
by sateesh peddini on Feb 27, 2007 02:02 AM  | Hide replies

hey guys,,, i am wondering why Indian movie makers can not make movie from an original idea.. such as " Munna Bhai movies.." if u see the Pan's labyrinth...we can understand how a small sentiment can make into a movie..

i think it is up to the contempory Indian movie makers.. who like to copy western/hongkong movies without giving credit to the original ideas..

things should change..to have a better moveis and better thinking

Cheers

cos indian movie makers even if they get an original idea, fear that it will not be liked by the audience if it doent have masala, songs. So they end up adding all that and in many cases the movie turns out to be unrealistic and loses its flavour. Lagaan without songs (the first one was necessary) would have had a better chance at the oscars. And even the producer if he was able to spend more and use advanced camera equipmet to shoot the final match, the climax would have been even more effective. But india producers cannot afford millions to spend on movies, hence sometimes quality gets compromised.

Water water everywhere!!
by Savio J on Feb 26, 2007 11:25 PM  | Hide replies

Rediff - give it a rest. It's a medicore film at best and does not deserve this kind of propoganda! And it may have been the least favorite amongst the voters anyway, given the competition it was facing. Having seen "Lives of Others" and "Pan's Labryinth", I can only say that this film got more than it deserved - to be placed in such revered ground!

What's unusual though is that Canada felt this was their best shot at the Oscar this year. This country actually won an Oscar in the recent past for "Barbarian Invasions" that was brilliant so this surely is a surprise!
I guess they felt the visual and ethnic factor may play in their favor!!

If you say Water does not deserve (which is understandable) read the comment from Ms. Deepti Rao in this section and you will laugh that people expect movies like Lagan for oscars. Lagan is a good movie but not worthy of oscars.

I'm also happy that WATER didn't win the Oscar. The reason being, it is not a movie made by Indian. These people who live outside India and make movies on Indian culture as if they are lived and enjoyed the Indian Culture since childhood.

I never liked Deepa Mehta movies; because she always portrays some tragic things happened in the Indian history and show them to western world. Did she ever make any movie on great Indian leader? Did she every try to project the progressive India?

Why can't she make movies on the issues like racism on blacks etc happening in Canada? She wouldn't dare. For next assignment, she must be going through the pages of Indian history and looking for a tragic subject; bring it up; make it controversial and earn dollars.

Last, Can she create a movie based on her creativity? I doubt she got it.

I totally agree with you.

I don't watch movies but when I heard Water from India was nominated I got to know the story from a friend.

An art movie should be messsage oriented.
Why make a movie which has no impact on the society? It's history and a bad remark on Indian society and people want to cash out showing our own flaws to the rest of the World.

Disgusting. Indian government should ban her from making movies in India.

Make a meaningful movie from which society can gain something.

Peace.

True I agree. Racism West is known for that all the time! Even now whites treat blacks as different citizens. Even though law allows no discrimination blacks and asians still are considered low. Why I have met a muslim fellow obeid here in US who keeps talking about outsourcing as if it affects him as the moron is an american citizen. I hate these Indians who are idiots and always complain and critize Indians just want to be included in west soceity and continue to boot lick. I live in US and I make it a point every time to talk great of India. People like Deepa mehta just wnats to be included in west soceity and she will NEVER be apart of either India or west the dirty snake.

Taking a controvertial subject does not stand you up there at Oscars .How well the film is important . Take the case RDB or LRMB . Adoor made many Malayalam world class films which hardly won an entry in Oscar . we don't care though. They spread good message with lot of character in it. Probably Water is the worst and only film made in Canada for 2006!! Deepa Mehta is one Psuedo intellectual who treats herself knowing of Hinduism well.

RDB did not get its entry into the oscar because law and order is perceived different in the western countries. here we believe that you are innocent until proven guilty whereas in India people believe that you are guilty until proven innocent. That is why in the end when the policemen came and started shooting randomly, there was the flaw of the movie because in the western country you will not be shot at randomly just because you took over the radio station. You will be asked to hand yourself over and the police are instructed to bring people to justice and not kill them at random. Therefore the nasty politics of India could not co related with the western culture.

In RDB they were not shot at just because they took over the radio station. Thy were shot at, because apparently they were instructed by the govt(in the movie) to shoot and kill them giving the govt the chance to project them as extremists/anti-socials who took over the radio station(becausethe dudes were blasting the govt on radio).
If they had been arrested, the govt feared they would become heroes after the public hears their story in the court.

Amit,

Insted of just rejoicing, try to see the plight of hindu widows in varanasi. Visit bihar (Gaya), UP (varanasi) madhya pradesh (Gwalior, ujjain etc) and you will see the truth. How the wodows, lower caste people are living. Critians are just using these situation for their cause the are not making those situations.

Can't you find a comparison with Jews, Skis etc. By comparing with Muslims, do the Hindu Widows get better any way. It will nice if you try to do some thing to lift up these people rather comparing

Dude, take it easy ... read my message properly. The muslim triple talaq is just an example. If you have no issues with that, let's take Mary Magdalene or for Jews, the way they treated Jesus etc. My whole problem here is Hindu bashing and hinduism being the softest target as yet. Jews still talk about holocaust after 65 odd years but no one talks about the carnage that happened in 1947 during partition. So if you have affinity towards muslims or non hindus, I understand that but just stop the hindu bashing is my original and final point.

Yes, I am a proud Hindu and looks like you are one of the missionaries. Indians are ready to face the truth but not when it is distorted. This is not the first time some one has painted hindu goddess in nude, gotten away with Hindu deities on toilet seat covers and sandals and unless we (Hindus) raise a hue and cry every time, I am sure the day is not far when all our women will be raped by christians and muslims and our last names also be something like "hyde" and not "jain". Deepa mehta is one such "convert" married to a christian and still after so many years trying to win the other side's acceptance by denouncing her own. Shame on her and again I am very happy (in fact eating and distributing sweets) that some one who was trying to malign hinduism under the garbs of artistic freedom did not win.

hello Genny, I never wrote against Deepa with resect to Hindusim ,however I disliked the movie as it reported wrong picture of India in international stage, I guess you are Indian too even though u r christin, will you feel proud when and american or canadian will ask you hey buddy your great grand moms were prostitutes after they became widows?"I hope you would not like,I never know in my last 5 generation atleast that is the record any body went monk after widow, infact in our very counrty before 3 generation there was a widow PM who was ruling the country,it is OK to bring hypothetical plot but it should not say whatever comes to mind, when she showed the movie like that it says that all the widows were headed by a prostitute leader in that ashram. Is that what you want to support as u said truth. The truth is some of the widows(like 0.01% of Indian population) adopted or forced to adopt according to their belief to go for a monk life after they became widow.May be most of them lived a misery life with not so much money to lead a comfortable life or luxurious food but dude that is again monk's life...however I dont support this.If somebody wants to becoem monk from his or her choice I respect it again. And certainly the truth is not that the widows were involved in prostitutions for money. If yes then it happens in all religious places, all are aware of that. Did she try to show any positive side of that. I guess at least few of women would have felt peace in that life. Lot of yound boys and girls become monks even now at Calcutta's Ramkrishna mission,ISKON,tibet, christian missions and all over the world, not all of them suffer and cry, some must be finding a way to peace. What does she know,I guess she is not even a good person, she does not bother to analyse the subect ,just pick up a theme and add illicet sex into it to make it spicy, may I know how much research she did as a filmmaker, how many evidences she can give? And with how many grand childrens of those widows she has interveiwed? Shame on you Deepa. Very shame on you.You better not make movie for your cheap popularity.

hi sanjit,
this movie prob is just a ficticious one why get upset over someones wild imagination??? its just a story. its not the truth or maybe its one persons depiction of the truth, its one persons story. that doesnt mean it happened to everyone. story writers never write the whole truth they paint a picture for u and if it touches u or ur heart or ur sentiments that means they were good writers thats all. dont take the movie too seriously and so literally. there r stories and myths and proofs that other gods didnt exist.... there is a documentary abt christ being married and having kids etc... the da vinci code said a lot too. did it make the christians mad??? no, it did disturb their faith a lil but then its just a movie, its just ppl making their imagination run wild so it was intelligent thinking and a good plot and the writer did for a moment make us believe the things he said so that means he is an effective writer. dont get mad at them... thats their talent thats their job and they r pretty good at it.

firstly this is not the first time hindu gods were painted in the nude. have u visited sun temple at konarak or the ajanta elora caves... gosh those r supposedly dipicting gods and their lives and they r pretty errotic sculptures and paintings. but i have nothing bad to say abt that cause that is the portrayal of mans mind. and thats how it was in those times. and the man of today has hatred for ppl of different religions and thats exactly what u portray in ur words. U may have reasons for not liking deepa mehta but really.... no one cares. there have been good men and women in all religions and there still are so dont judge humanity by one person in the community, it just goes to show how ignorant and illiterate of the world u r. why do u feel threatened by the christians they consist of only 3 % of indias population, they r the most peace loving ppl. and lastly to close what i have to say... the language u write today was the language brought to this country by foreigners and missionaries, and if they didnt bring that language here u wld never know how to express urself to ppl of the world, so dont go screaming ur head of at them and predicting what will happen in the future cause u r a product of yesterdays future and looks like the missionaries did a good job with u. I am no missionary but i just dont hate ppl based on any silly thing. its just a movie so talk abt its direction casting acting skills of everyone and be more a film critic rather than a race or religion critic. Dont support ppl who cry racism when they go abroad when u r as bad as them.
Glad to know u r a proud hindu just dont be ignorant.

i didnt know christ was married and had kids, and its pretty interesting information... i like reading abt it and how people prove their beliefs as truths. those ppl r pretty intelligent i must say. do i believe what they write... i wont answer that, but i have my own faith and my own belief and a book or a film wont change that. thats how strong i am. ppl can say anything but as long as ur faith in ur religion is strong no one can change ur way of thinking. its ppl that r shakey abt their religion belief and faith that begin to doubt or feel it might influence others . its just a story or maybe its the true story of one person, did that happen to everyone? maybe it did maybe it didnt. the bottom line is that the whole movie is just a story.
