Why brokeback lost to crash
by Pavan on Mar 12, 2006 12:44 PM

Recently i watched the two movies and i clearly see no doubt that crash won the best picture award. I completely with academy that it awarded crash as best picture. As for as brokeback, the film is good but does not have the potential to stand against crash for best picture category. Crash trully deserves the award. Cheers!

Honestly, I dont know why you are taking about the oscars being conservative. Brokeback had its fair share of wins and Crash deserved its best picture win. HELLO how is it a conservative call, a movie made about America's race relations and depicting the truth about American society you OBVIOUSLY dont live here to understand how impactful a movie like that is. After seeing both films I am glad Crash won it deserved to it was a wonderfully made film and maybe they should make a movie about INDIA and all their states and segregation how ppl r so seperated and just crash Into each other..

Safe, secure and wussie!

Almost everything this year was safe, predictable and conservative. Starting off with nominations where even Kiera Knightley (Pride and Prejudice) made it.

Then, George Clooney wins for Best Supporting Actor over stellar performances from William Hurt (A History of Violence) and jake Gyllenhall (Brokeback Mountain)

Reese Witherspoon(Walk the Line) was the only one to make the cut after it was easy to see that no one else from the film would make it.

Hence Felicity Huffman was scorned.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman(Capote) - easy and Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain) - appeasement.

In the face of all this, Crash deserved to win.

Once again Spieldberg was treated like an absentee and the Oscars looked like a popularity contest in most categories like Rachel Weiz (The Constant Gardener) over relatively unknown names like Amy Adams (Junebug),Catherine Keener(Capote),Frances McDormand(North Country)and Michelle Williams(Brokeback Mountain).

The ONLY Highlight at this years Oscars was that for a change, there were very few studio produced films in the fray - independent films were given a chance.

This may just be the beginning of a change in the Academy's outlook. Maybe

Its truly an academy !

While Brokeback maybe a "fine" movie, Crash is a "real" movie. Needless to say the themes should not be compared. Both movies have excellent cinematic performances, however Crash seemed to make you think more, make you feel more through the performers. Also, there are very few movies in the world which have such unparalled quality of film editing as Crash..it caught the eye of even a layman like me! I am glad that academy did not ignore Crash because it lacked typical hollywood glamour.

It is very funny and immature to accuse an Academy of people as not having done justice to one film that is close to the writer's heart. In fact many people should be offended by the fact that the writer seems to think that movies depicting issues of racism and class divisions in society are not worthy of an Oscar. Racism is still a reality in this world. Anyone - even an Indian in the US has experienced atleast a little bit of prejudice from their American counterparts at some point in their US life. Ofcourse that holds good for how we perceive our Caucasian brothers too. Let me ask you a question - How do you expect people to completely embrace issues created by man(like sexual preference) , when he cannot even get past issues that are not in his control like skin color, language or nationality?
All said and done this is just a creative process and the movie that appealed to more people ultimately won.

Very blunt!

It's a pity that a columnist's personal beliefs is reflected in a commentary on something such as the oscars, where the award is given not based on importance of certain social issues, but on pure artistic creativity. Sure, Brokeback Mountain had a good emotional story and great cinematography, but Crash was what touched people's hearts more! It was a far more effective movie, both emotionally and visually. Just because Crash beat a movie that generates controversy doesn't mean that it has to be ripped off of it's worth. Crash deserved to win the oscar for best feature length film. Let's face it, the only reason brokeback got so much attention is because of its gay theme. Crash got attention because its a great movie, plain and simple! Movies dealing with racism is not controversial anymore. And also, Aseem Chhabra drawing parallel's of the oscars with the american elections.......what on earth was that all about?!! He couldn't possibly be more blunt with the fact that he is very liberal minded. I hope rediff gets new writers who stop writing preachy articles and instead write the kind that invokes it's readers to think about what was written in a productive manner.
