why crash deserved to win
by yazdi mistry on Mar 07, 2006 12:07 PM

simply put crash took the bull by the horns and rode it very well , no long lingering shots of mountains while your protagonists rolled inthe grass . you got your leading lady being strip searched by a hungry cop and thats that . Mr lee has to understand that a good movie should leave you disturbed , haunted and wondering where the world is headed . for once the oscars have bitten the bullet well . hope it lasts

Why Crash won best pic?
by venkatADRI THIRUVALLUR on Mar 07, 2006 06:24 AM

Well, simply put, Crash is an excellent film. And anyone who have
lived in any major US city will relate to the authenticity and
effectiveness of this movie.

Brockback was also a very moving and thoughtful movie. And both
deal with important issues.

In the end, I think the better movie won. This reviewer (Chabbria)
seems either extremely childish (read the reasons given for why BB
didnt win...gosh some are downright funny...like the voters from LA
prefer crash becoz its about their city...gimme a break!) or a commie
(read the line where it says that the oscar voters & hollywood
establishment is CONSERVATIVE!! Gosh I think this one actually takes
the cake!) or both!!!

You are wrong

Asseem Chabria, Please get your facts right. Yes, Millions of Americans voted for Kerry BUT Millions of Americans voted for Bush too. I would suggest that you go and check your data regarding 2004 elections. It will show you that Bush won 280 odd against 240 that Kerry got. It just shows that you want to bring your liberal views into your review which is very sad. If there was a movie made on Gays in India then INDIANS WILL OPPOSE IT WITH MAJORITY. What say about that?

by Shrihari on Mar 07, 2006 12:58 AM

What was the need to pull bush in this article? Is it the fashion now a days for bush-bashing? It makes no sense at all for the movie column have political colors in it.

No one is going to like this article more that they are supposed to do becuase for bush hatred.

Midnight Cowboy gay film??
by Vidya Ramanathan on Mar 07, 2006 12:17 AM  | Hide replies

The author should see Midnight Cowboy if he/she hasn't already seen it before.... IT ISN'T A GAY FILM!
Yes, it had a X-rating in those days, but that was because the protagonist Jon Voight's character, Joe Buck was a NY city hustler! Job Buck and his freind Ratso Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman), were not gay lovers!
Please watch the movies before you cite them to arrive at your logic/reason of how/why the academy is biased!

RE:Midnight Cowboy gay film??

sorry to burst your bubble here hon, but midnight cowboy is surely built around a gay relationship between Hoffman and Voight. The review for this movie goes something like this:

"The relationship between Joe (Voight) and Ratso(Hoffman) is handled in such a way as to be viewed as an unusually strong friendship OR having it's homosexual underpinnings. I think the director handled this in a subtle way not to cop out to the censorship of the times, but rather to concentrate his energies on the importance of a strong human connection in life, whether it be sexual or not."

So I strongly suggest that, before you start criticizing someone for taking the time to pen together a few lines in the form of an article, you do your homework regarding what these movies are all about and then come up with your criticism. Or maybe you are too stuck up and snooty to do that eh!? Either way Ms. high maintainence, like people always say, its easy to point fingers at someone else's work.

Exactly what I want to say. What I would like to add is that the author clearly shows his bias when he says Kerry was more deserving / Brokeback was better and things like that.

supporting the second best??
by krishan on Mar 07, 2006 12:02 AM

it seems like you are supporting the second best. crash won because more people voted for it. Bush won because more people voted for him. I dont know much about how movies and oscars work. But, for Bush and Kerry, one thing was sure more people wanted Bush to win than for Kerry...isnt that how democracy is supposed to work!!

Why brokeback lost to crash?
by Ankur on Mar 06, 2006 11:29 PM

Well this article gives an impression that the academy has stuck to its conservationalist roots and has given crash the best movie, there might be another reason for something like this to happen, myabe Crash is just better, because it handles issues much more important than 2 gay guys who are not supposed to be gay. I think there are more people who suffer from racism than gay rights.
no worries.

Why Brokeback lost to Crash.
by Harpal Singh on Mar 06, 2006 09:42 PM

Its sad to know that even in this world where people are aware that there is something called " Gay " relationships, Oscar panel still does not want to recongnise such thing and try to be away from it.
It is heart rending that Brokeback lost the " Best movie " award. I believe that is how Life goes...you like something and you don't get it and you try and try again.

Prejudice
by Raghu on Mar 06, 2006 08:33 PM

Sir, with all due respect, I think your article is biased and full of prejudice. Just because, you like BrokeBack Mountain/John Kerry and do not like or approve Crash/George W. Bush, you cannot justify an article like this. With your prejudice, you cannot seem to agree that more than half of the people who mattered, voted for Crash/George W. Bush. You tend to ignore the choice people made, which is not what you wanted necessarily.

"Just over a year ago millions of Americans voted for Kerry, but eventually the other (and some might say the less deserving) candidate won."- is a prime example of your narrow mindedness.
