DDLJ is bit overrated..
by Raajiv Mhasawade on May 18, 2005 12:26 AM

DDLG isnt as good as HAHK or K3G.Its overrated.Of course movie is nice, story is OK,Adi's best movie(or say story) is of Veer Zaara(movie was awful exculding Rani)Yash Raj Films are good for watching twice or thrice but 500 weeks isnt what they deserve.Review is written on the basis of 500 weeks so no chance of criticizing it!
Raajiv
P.S:I seriuosly dont understand what's so special about SRK in this movie!K3G is his best film ever.

Fake run for 500 weeks
by skumar on May 17, 2005 12:26 PM

This is good movie but running 500 weeks is not ta truth. I don't know why rediff guys or media don't tell us truth behind this success. It ran in some theatres (more than one)for 53 -56 weeks in regular shows and shifted to Maratha Mandir in Matinee after that. It came to Maratha Mandir after 56 weeks in matinee, not from begining. Now, Manoj Desai owner of theatre wanted to make record just to pull down Sholay. It was not possible for him to run it in regualr shows or matinee with actual ticket price. So matinee price were reduced to 9,11,13(Tax Free) 13,15,17 with Tax. He kept on running this movie with out bothering about people in theatre with his loss, as he had to make record.I think after 300 weeks(or from begining, not sure) Chopra family came to know this fact and started supporting him. The result is with you guys. I tried to see this movie around Jul-Aug around 2 years ago, 4 times. 2 times some english movie was running and other time DDLJ with handfull of people(Run has already been inturpted). If this is the way to run a movie then any good movie can run for 7-8 years.

Good Mr. Chopra and Desai keep on doing this. Good luck.

DDLJ - A Cult phenomenon, not a cinematic achievement
by pepys on May 14, 2005 08:42 AM  | Hide replies

Exactly 500 weeks ago, in 1995, the film Dilwale Dulhania Ley Jayenge (DLDJ) was released. The film has run continuously ever since in a Mumbai cinema hall. I have seen this film, I think on television (or was it on a flight?). I do not recollect much of the film, it is so eminently forgettable. But if you havent seen it yet, you must. Dont go looking for cinematic qualities - it has none. A very pedestrian film has become the longest running film in the Indian cinematic history. It is a social phenomenon, not a cinematic success.
Why is DDLJ, which lacks the most fundamental requirement of a good cinema - a story line - such a success? The film is neither aesthetic nor has it any substance. DDLJ neither takes any stance on an issue nor conveys any message. What then is responsible for its record breaking run? To my mind it is a cult phenomenon.
Films in India grow on word of mouth publicity more than anything else and in this case this has been spearheaded by nubile women of urban India. This is evident from the thread of posts on the Internet. Indian girls found in Shahrukh Khan (SRK) a perfect trophy boy friend, whom they would have liked to take home to show to their parents. Soooo Cuteeee gush girls on post after post on the Net. The fact that he chooses not to elope with the girl despite parental opposition to their union is held up as a Great Indian Virtue. And the added bonus is that he actually respects the girls family. These ideal qualities have endeared SRKs character Raj so much to Indian girls that they have taken the film to this exalted position.
The films release timing is also extremely important in its success. The country was riding the wave of economic reforms. And along with economic liberalisation, came social emancipation. Sexual inhibitions were being shed in Indian society. Young girls were basking in their new found freedom. More Indians were looking westward for their role models. Yet there was deep-rooted confusion and girls with the want to have it and eat it mentality found a perfect role model in SRKs Raj. They took to him like fish to water.
All cults spread and grow because its followers choose not to apply their mind. The same is true for DDLJ. DDLJ is a modern Indian cult phenomenon spread by confused young women of urban India.
