Bollywood remakes
by Hem on May 05, 2005 07:33 PM

Bollywood cannot do justice to good Hollywood movies when they remake it. They tend to mix their own bollywood masala in those remakes and the final product is a typical bollywood movie with song and dance sequences. If I have already seen a Hollywood movie, I ain't gonna watch its Bollywood remake. It still makes sense to make these remakes, first because Bollywood lacks good script writers, second the Hollywood movies have not been seen by non-english speaking folks in India. So if they have to make a remake, they can do an exact copy rather than indianize it!

Why copy ideas from abroad, when India have so many talented writers?
by Rakesh on May 05, 2005 04:48 PM

Just remember the good old blockbuster films like Guddu, Anand, Abhimaan, Sholay, Shatranj ke kkhiladi, Aparajita, Devdas,......... the list is endless. India still has many powerful story-writers, so why do we need to import ideas from Hollywood?

Well, it's always fast and much easier to adopt a foreign hit movie into Bollywood, moulding it a bit here and there to fit Indian circumstances, rather than working hard on a new project based on an in-house author's novel. But as the statistics show the copycat projects seldom become hit, maybe 10% and 90% of them fall flat.

Remake of hollywood films
by R K on May 05, 2005 10:57 AM  | Hide replies

I am waiting to see when and how they re-make SPIDERMAN. I think the role of Spidy will be played by Akshay Kumar and his patent dialogue will be "Rishte me to hum tumhare baap hote hain, naam hai Spiderman". When Sipdy leaves his girlfriend, he will say "In aansuon ko rok lo Pushpa I hate tears". In the climax scene Spidy will grab the villain and say "Yaad kar aaj se bees saal pahele tune ................."

Hilarious....
Point very well made.
I could not help smiling at your proposed line "Rishte mein to hum tumhare baap...". That's exactly what comes to mind when you see these "past middle age" heroes with 16 something heroins.
And the jest of the matter: Most Hollywood movies doesn't fit into Indian circumstances/culture/dialogues is very clear.

Remake
by Anand on May 05, 2005 09:18 AM

I think a remake of Predator (Arnold S)would be interesting.
Director- Ramgopal verma
Music- Salim Suleiman (No songs)
Starcast- Sanjay Dutt, Suneil Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, John Abraham, ( 2 other actors with the smaller roles- Dino Morea and Arbaaz Khan)- Amitabh Bachchan with a special appearance as their commander who plans their mission.

The Alien should be designed stylishly and not look like jokers (Koi mil gaya).

Face Off
by Arun on May 05, 2005 04:33 AM

One film that always comes to my mind first, when I think about Hollywood remakes. It has everything that is bollywood. Great action, suspense, chases, plot and more importantly, 2 male leads that has become a norm for bollywood flicks.

Before watching AKS (Bachhan-Manoj Bajpai starrer), I thought it was probably a Face-Off remake since it was about one character getting into another's skin. But it turned out to be one inspired by "Fallen".

They should stop copying
by uthaman on May 05, 2005 03:34 AM

It is ridiculous to copy so many movies from Hollywood. They don't have brain? They have copied movies like Gift, Identity. They don't leave even junk movies. Worst of all they copied one 1960s movie of Cary Grant's charade. It is ridiculous to see the hindi directors devoid of any originality. I would expect them to come out with original stories. Some of the movies they take shot by shot no matter whether it fits our culture or not. For example there is a scene where one retard burns his father alive. They lifted directly from the original which was sick. Priyadarshan copies all malayalam movies and makes in Hindia. Some tamil and telugu movies are remade. Rest of the movies are "boy meets girl" type.
Tunes are copied, Stories are copied. I have absolutely no respect for bollywood movie industry. Probably one of the worst unoriginal film industry i have seen.

Bowfinger
by mallu boy on May 05, 2005 02:40 AM

I think Eddie Murphy - Steve Martin comedy Bowfinger should be remade in Hindi, adding the Bollywood flavor--not only the on-screen flavor but also the behind-the-screen scenario of Bollywood should be explored. I say so because 1. the film is about a film which gives an idea platform to spoof Bollywood and its people and 2. it was recently made in Malayalam as Udyanaanu thaaram, *ing Mohanlal as the struggling assistant director and comedian Sreenivasan as the superstar, which was a huge blockbuster.
I'd pick Saif Ali Khan to play the hero (the role of a struggling assistant director who can't get his film made) and Paresh Rawal as the pompus and annoying Superstar.
