mangal pandey: not an accidental hero!
by Ankur Singh on Aug 15, 2005 05:53 PM

When hardly anybody knows who Mangal pandey was, portraying such an image may chisel in conflicting beliefs. I don't know why we Indians hesitate to accept that the land on which we are standing comes out of an effort of such brave martyrs only, so what difference does it makes that he was an accidental hero or a brave martyr. He was a hero, this is what one needs to acknowledge. Why couldn't Nana saheb or Rani Laxmi Bai or Tantya Tope emerge as an hero at that very moment, where were they... actually they were waiting for such an incident to take place. So who was the actual hero...Mangal pandey, of course...he only invigorated the freedom movement. It has always been a sort of chicanery to setforth ambivalent thoughts by authors. Start appreciating man! U have still not contributed a single valuable thing to this country.

It requires some courage to stand in the middle, knowing that empire would kill him. This when the cause is as honest to see the evil empire when the British were using the Macaulay's legacy to manufacture British Sepoys required a lot of courage. If Mukherjee wants to say that it was for Bhang ( The soldiers use liquor ), then he is a manufactured sepoy of other kind, his mission is to fight Mangal. Didn't Mangal call his other comrades, stood in the front untill he decided his death ? Wasn't it an onslaught of the magnitude where British changed their policy towards India ? Would the british have done it because of an addict ? Thanks to the other sepoys !

1857's Impact on Colonial India and Implications for the National Movement
by Saurabh Saklani on Aug 15, 2005 03:20 PM

The notion of Indianness emerged from the ravages of the 1857 uprising in a most peculiar fashion since violence was camouflaged behind powerful intellectualism and moral motivations like non-cooperation and satyagrah.Influential voices began acquainting the people with British smoke screens and the sheer exploitation of the country became a harsh realization. The formation of the Indian National Congress in 1885 was one of the many testimonials acknowledging the growing idea of nationality. The events of 1857, in an obscure and paradoxical way, became a symbol of challenge to the tyrannical colonial authority although its manifestation in the independence movement was of a very different hue.
If patriotism had been the guiding force behind the 1857 uprising, then there would have been little doubt that its nature was indeed nationalistic. But 1857, in many ways, paved the way for the subsequently victorious national movement in ninety years. It was the deep collective belief and India's own unique philosophy of independence for its own sake within the concept of purn swaraj which inundated national thinking in the successful independence movement led by Gandhi ji.

What is the point of doing this meaningless debate? Some people think of him as a hero while others are dubious abt. it...Mangal Pandey was a human who was and is something of an inspiration to people..if not for the noblest of intentions then atleast for his guts! He was no Mahatma...but as the full facts cannot be ascertained, why don't we just let the poor man's soul rest in peace? Oh, and if you still want to argue, fine, don't watch the movie, nobody is asking u to. If you would like to get a load of fine acting go watch the movie. End of matter. Ok? thank you.:)
