Using the powerful movie medium, we, gullible Indians, are yet again being indocrinated with an absolute myth. As in case of all Indian myths, including mythology, events are being created, imaginary stories are being promoted with well hidden motives. We may thus expect many more such tales, projecting greater patriotism, bravery, sacrifice for the country, for freedom etc. so as to pale all known Indian freedom heroes. Nathuram Godse is made a hero.Indira`s assasins are heroes. Rajiv`s killers are heroes. People who are instrumental in killing thousands in the name of the temple are worshipped as Loh Purush. The Godhra villains are praised sky high for their pride. But, will all this be able to change the true history? Let us reject these phoneys resolutely and also reject all those who are trying to fool us. Let Aamir Khan convince India of his patriotism through movies based on some truth.

The comments of Rudrangshu Mukherjee appear much more closer to the truth than an article which is a promo for a highly misleading seditious film

We have to many disoriented patriots ( much like mangal pandey) and less tax payers.

Thanks to Aamir

In India, people are free to express their views. Some understand the responsibility attached with it, while others believe in creating sensation. Rudranghsu Mukherjee is free to condemn anybody. People say he wrote his book under the influence of alcohol & drugs. Well, might be true. WHO CARES & WHO READS HIS BOOKS !!!

Thanks to Aamir for remembering this HERO again.

Just give it a thought:
Can an ordinary sepoy, under the influence of bhang, motivate his fellow soldiers to fight against The English?
Can he create a fear in britishers mind, which will force them, to hang him 10 days earlier?

The book referred to in the article must be yet another work by those Indian writers commissioned by the British to write or rather distort and obfuscate historic facts uncomfortable to them.

There were quite a few writers both of Indian and western origin who went out of the way to portray 1857 uprising as a mere revolt by a handful of soldiers.
It was definitely the first war of independence and not 'Sepoy Mutiny' as derisively described by the stooges of the British Raj.

It was a simultaneous uprising across the country which failed because of lack of coordination and impulsiveness of a few soldiers.
Punjabis were cleverly kept out of it by the British by setting the Sikhs against the Mughal Emperor Bhadur Shah Zafar who gladly came forward to lead the war by citing the horrors perpetrated on Sikhs by the Moghuls predecessors of Bahdurshah Zafar!

Mangal Pandey is not the First.

Dear Sir,
I object to saying that History is being said wrongly.
As of my knowedge and records archilogically and Historially.
The first war of Indipendence started with the British by Kittur Rani Chanamma in Kittur near Belgam Karnataka.
Rani Channamma put up against the British here in 1824. Enraged by the high handiness of Thakeray, the collector of Dharawad, when he refused to let the adopted son of Mallasarja rule his death. When all negotiations failed, the brave Rani fought until the Kittur army defeated and she was taken prisoner.

Hope the History is not taught wrongly to the coming gererations.

Please look into the facts.

I request rediff.com to respect the Brave Rani The first to start the war of Independene and the First Brave women of India.

I request again to bring the real facts to the view of Indians in the Month of Indias Independence.

In fact There are clear records and proofs in History, even before 1857, Veera Pandia Katta Bomman, Maruthu Brothers of Tamil nadu were first to fight against The British. Let me quote what Mr. Sundar Rajan has siad in this same board:

"For your information, mangal pandey was not the first freedom fighter. Kattabomma Nayak of Panchalamkurichi was the first one to fight the british army and he was hanged to death by collector Jackson of Thirunelveli.

Please refer to the book:
# * National Movement in Tamil Nadu, 1905-1914
- Agitational Politics and State Coercion,
N.Rajendran
Madras Oxford University Press,
* indicates link to Amazon.com bookshop on line

Excerpts from the book:

Collector Jackson singled out Kattabomma Nayak of Panchalamkurichi as the main leader of the rebellion. That came to be known as the First Poligari War was declared on 5 September 1799. Although Kattabomman managed to escape from the field of battle, he was captured a month later in Pudukottai. After a summary trial, he was sentenced to death..."

Why write such silly writeups which come from internet- anti Indian and anti Heros of India.

if he were a real patriot why did he join british army in the first place??

i wud say he was just an accident, and he had no option but to fight or die.
he did it for his own life.

well i wud agree that it must have been difficult to imagine india as a conceptual country at that time with low levels of education.

First answer these 2 questions:
1. Can an ordinary sepoy, under the influence of bhang, motivate his fellow soldiers to fight against The English?
2. Can he create a fear in britishers mind, which forced them, to hang him 10 days earlier?

THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH MANY INDIANS IS "THEY DON'T APPRECIATE ANYBODY." Are you also one of them?
