Don't conclude without going through facts
by Amit Dua on Aug 23, 2005 12:30 AM  | Hide replies

I don't know too much about Mangal Pandey, but I just want to say only one thing. I am unable the understand why to judge a person or incident on the basis of a book. My straight forward approach is that instead of involving in this topic emotionally we should go through facts and figures, if these go in favour of writer it is Ok, if it doesn't than there is no meaning of trusting on the book.

Mangal Pandey - To create a Rising Again
by Mathew on Aug 20, 2005 01:41 AM

Mukherjee by his conrovertial book only made Mangal pandey, The Brave Martyr, a Great Hero. Now,Amir Khan's Mangal Pandey is to create a Rising Again.

The British hanged mangal Pandey 10 days before the scheduled execution date. Does it not prove the British were afraid to keep him alive, for it will endanger Bristish rule?

Why did the jamadaar refused to arrest Mangal Pandey? Was he too in toxication? In fact jamadaar was also arrested and punished along with mangal Pandey. Why should a jamadaar, risk his life to save a sepoy who committed a reckles act?

Does the author answers these questions in his book?

Even if Mangal Pandey had acted in toxification, he has revolted against British, and so he is a Brave Martyr.

I have always looked down upon people who bring in regionalism even while discussing patriotism.I had this prejudice against bengalis(the author of a book against mangal pandey is also one) that they lack not just virility but also patriotism.Unlike the rest of the great north indians(punjabis,Uttar pradesh, awadhis, jats, muslims, etc.),these people are always trying to prove that they are culturally superior to the rest of northis.
I think this is high time that they be reminded of S.C.bose. probably the only bengali"man" to be called great.
I SALUTE MANGAL PANDEY ALONG WITH THE REST OF INDIA.
Please fellow counntrymen, realise that such a big regiment can never follow a drunken and addicted sepoy as portrayed my Mr. Banerjee.Likes of him should be sent to army where you already have a scarcity of bengalis.
Jai Hind.

Who was Mangal Pandey

I do not think Rudrangshu Mukherjee may be quite justified in his judgment. After all anyone who fell fighting the British would be a freedom fighter in my estimation. One feels that this is again a sort of postmodernistic putting down of the freedom struggle because it does not suit the Marxists. And I am saying this not as a supporter of the Sangh Parivar or the BJP. In one of the reactions I read that the film is seditious ?! In what age are we living?

If i remember my history text book correctly, the 1857, First war of independence had been covertly planned by a lot of our leaders , to begin simultaneously across the country, but Mangal Pandey Jumpstarted the revolution unplanned and the lack of co-ordination between our different regions due to this led to the failure of the first war of independence, correct me if i'm wrong .

Mongal Pandey Is a very good venture to get information about our freedom fighter for the students. I believe that it will help the History students for their study. I personally thank the Director and Mr.Amir Khan for presenting a good and knowledgable film.
