Worth an Oscar nomination

Well, what does one get when the very best in Hollywood are brought together under one roof doing what they are best known for.
Another masterpiece is the obvious answer.
And that is precisely what Terminal is all about.
Narrating the sorry plight of Viktor Navorski (played by Tom Hanks), an Eastern European Immigrant who gets stranded at the JFK international airport when a coup in his homeland deprives him his passport, visa and return tickets.
Matters get complicated when the airport official Frank Dixon (Stanley Tucci) stops him from entering the US or returning back to his homeland.

What follows suite is a beautiful chain of events.
Viktor tries to make the most of the situation by making himself home at a gate terminal.
Involving modifications to a set of benches for sleeping, collecting quarters for food, learning English from television schedules of friends, making friends with the local airport employees Joe Mulroy (Chi McBride), Gupta (Kumar Pallana, an Indian convict working as a Janitor) and Enrique Cruz (Diego Luna), and the very best - innocently evading all efforts on the pa

Review is to the point and very honest
by Murali Bandaru on Jun 21, 2004 11:59 PM

I sincerely think that Arthur has reviewed 'The Terminal' with no pre-conceived notions about Spielberg and Tom Hanks. I always see that people try to compare Hollywood movies to Indian movies as one of the messages posted here complains about our movies. I personally think that general audience in India is not mature enough to digest varied kind of movies and that is precisely the reason filmmakers shy away from taking any risks. There is definitely a section of Indian audience that likes experimental movies but that section is a little too small to commercially justify non hero worshipping movies. But anyway, to come to the point of The Terminal, I think that Spielberg always plays safe with his scripts except for one or two and Arthur is quite right in pointing the loopholes of this script.

the terminal review
by pappu on Jun 21, 2004 12:32 PM

the critic just for the sake of criticising has pointed out ``script loopholes'' while the other part of his review suggest that he too couldn't simply resist the irresistable steven speilberg. one needs to be very sure while writing about craftsman like speilberg.

seems like the critic slept thro the movie
by gowri on Jun 20, 2004 11:25 PM

The loophole pointed out by the critic, well, most of them seem ridiculous...
Victor is able to buy a suit cos hes getting paid about $20 an hour for his work...that Im sure lets save to buy a suit, and he's not even paying for food.
And, I think its very wrong to say that theres a lot to be enjoyed if movie fans can suspend their disbelief considerably....
Appreciate the movie for it is genuinely good, sometimes critics think they always have to show a movie in bad taste!

The tradition continues
by abhijit on Jun 20, 2004 12:26 PM

Thanks to rediff! it continues its tradition of bashing masterpieces and tauting 'substandard' movies. I believe The Terminal is one of the best movies..like an oasis in the desert of sci-fi and special effects. Tom Hanks/Zeta Jones n other supporting starcast deserve great appreciation. "gupta"..man u r just awesome!!!!

Not so many loopholes
by hemmant on Jun 20, 2004 07:48 AM

In his anxiousness to pinpoint all the so called big plot holes and thereby giving us evidence to his keen sense of observation, the reviewer seems to have made a few blunders himself. A well-dressed man who doesnt seem to have any money is mentioned as the first loophole, he seems to forget that there is a specific mention in the movie that the currency of Krakozhia is not valid in the United States anymore, I can assure the author that not all of us have the innate ability to plan every detail of our trip and make sure we exchange some of our currency. The other problem the reviewer has seems to be the fact that Navorski falls for a woman like Amelia warren, Do all men fall for females because of their character? At least I dont believe so (Catherine Zeta-Jones is quiet beautiful). According to me the only things that might be a little hard to believe for some, might be the way Navorski learns English, though it looks rather ingenious and charming, the fact remains that it is rather difficult to learn a language by translating it using two travel guides and the fact that nobody seems to try and communicate with Navorski using signs or pictures. All in all, the movie is thoroughly watch able and will most likely earn Tom Hanks an Oscar nomination.

I did not write this to criticize the reviewer but rather express my opinion; the fact that I read the entire article goes to show that the author has done a pretty good job.
