Ambar Chatterjee
I : Proud To Be An Indian
by Ambar Chatterjee on Mar 31, 2004 09:40 PM

I Proud to be an Indian starts off with a bang. The entry Of Sohail Khan is probably the best thing in the first half. The film narrates the atrocities of the non whites in the foreign countries as a whole. The Charecter of Sohail Khan is rather complex as it tries to strike a balance between his own outrageous principal and that of the subdued ones of his parents & relatives.Sohail runs into trouble with the so called skin heads and their head cane Played by a foreign artist, who believes that he is the only one who can wash away the non whites from England & thus clean up his environment from the "Koolis".Thus starts a struggle between the two which Sohail wins after much hew & cry.
Sohail Plays the nameless "I" with aplomb & is well supported by Kulbhushan Kharbanda & Asif Sheikh as his cowardly relatives who after much deliberation stand up by I's side in the final battle.
Rest of the starcast thaugh donot have a sustancial part to play but revolve around the main charecters admirably but the main punch in the film is "Tim" as the Evil Cane who not only looks impossing but also is able to garner hate for his charecter which is a victory in itself.
Worth A Watch.....!

new critics needed!
by me on Mar 01, 2004 05:23 AM

if the critic is biased before even entering the movie with the thought that it is bad to make an unconventional film, rather than praising the film for taking a chance rather than going with the flow and making the regular "bend it like beckham" type movies, how can the review possibly be good, regardless of how good the movie is?? rediff needs new critics.

Racism- touchy subject
by Tahnya on Feb 26, 2004 10:57 PM

I haven't seen the movie, but I believe that if they made a film on racism in the UK, then racism must be prevalent. Why make a movie on a non-existent subject. Well I can't say thay I myself have had any racist experience in UK as I have never really been there. However this is my experience that I had in US (I am a Canadian born and raised eh!). This was about 12 years back, I was 12 and was going to the mall with abu (dad) and some lady who was truly ignorant asks me in a rude manner, 'so is that your husband' ewwww that's gross..hello not all brown people marry someone 40 years older than them. Then on the same trip in a parking lot, some guy screamed'Go back to your country Paki ' um that would be Canada eh..since I AM CANADIAN! My gosh the ignorance that drips from these peoples brains and into their big mouths never ceases to astound me!! The great US of A..THANK GOD IM CANADIAN!

Filmfare Awards are fixed
by Ashish on Feb 23, 2004 04:03 AM

Like some ODI matches of past, these days Filmfare awards are "Fixed"

In 1970s and 1980s the award for best actor or actress used to go to the "real performer." These days it goes to the actor or actress of the most hit film.

For this year shouldn't Urmila get award for Pinjar? But she is not even nominated for Pinjar and surprise, surprise Priety Zinta is nominated for her mediocre acting in Kal ho na ho. Agreed movie is great but Zinata's acting is below par in that film-and she gets nomintaion, what crap!

i agree
by Jeswant on Feb 18, 2004 07:35 AM

racism exists and 'I' sounds pretty reasonable to watch. but why does everybody stick to UK and USA. there is another place called Australia. Now this is one country where racism exists but isnt all that obvious as it is in UK and USA. What others have said is true, a FEW whites hate Asians (In fact Indians are not classified as Asians., we are classified as curries)But the fact remains that most whites dont care a damn.

if shah Rukh was there would have been a pathbreaking movie
by sumbul on Feb 14, 2004 07:54 PM  | Hide replies

If only rediff's favourite Shah Rukh Khan was there it would have been a pathbreaking movie for REDIFF.

The same reason for which Khaki , having grossed 3 cr from Mumbai city alone and 2 cr from Delhi City alone is called AVERAGE for the benefit of Shah Rukh Khan .

film on skinheads
by P.A.RAZI MUSTAFA on Feb 13, 2004 10:12 PM  | Hide replies

The film on skinheads (i am proud to be an indian) is
absolutely true and good worth of subject, the reason is, india is a hindu country and people living in india are black, majority are very poor and live with very diffrent cultures than other dominant religions like christians and muslims, for this diference there is lot of discrimination against indians.
What ever it may be, when indians go abroad (overseas)
indians have to bow their head, indians cant get equal treatment in front of europeans, americans, and arabs.

Racism is an age old problem..but it depends on how its depicted.........
It is not as rampant as it may have been shown..in the movie..
it is prevalant esp in Europe and Aus..but it snot something like a Hatred.......!!
And well whatvere be the problems..Ppl frm India will continue to be here..!
