a) the concert was organized and managed by adi mangeshkar - lata's nephew ... so she was bound to sit through it, no matter how bad.
b) the objection is not to singers themselves but their trying to imitate lata. usha uthup sang in her own style and did a marvellous job.
c) how stupid of certain rediff readers to think that chitra's criticism is a case of regionalism. firstly anyone in their right senses would not compare ANYONE to lata.
let the legend enjoy her birthday without such stupid accusations.
Lataji's birthday celebration concert creates mixed feeling, some performances like Bombay Viking disappoints me because it smells very "ugly" imitation of Lataji's original song.I don't know why some singers like Kabita Krishnamurthy and Suresh Wadkar was so nervous. It is felt that they did not prepared themselv properly. On the other hand some performers like Shankar Mahadevan,Hansraj Hans and Hariharan made me happy with their creative musical brilliance.Lastly I have to say presentation needed more smartness.
It was indeed a poor show. No one can deny that Chitra is a very good singer, but she could not do justice with song "Rasik Balma". To add insult to injury, re-mixes followed, what a cruel joke to the legendry singer who never like these. The only shining feature was the song "Jyoti Kalash Chhalke", sung by Lataji herself. Hope the shortcomings of this programme will not be repeated when she completes 75 years (of course, if she agrees for organising such function).
How can the writer make such a bad comment about Chitra. She is a versatile singer and the only singer who has won national awards a couple of times for malayalam, tamil, telugu and hindi
