Campaigning for World No Tobacco Day by Bollywood Stars
by Sandeep on May 22, 2003 11:14 PM

Dear rediff.com friend,
Hello!
It's nice to know that Vivek Oberoi, Urmila Matondkar, Shashi Kapoor, Shaad Ali are campaigning on World No Tobacco Day in an ad film. Here are a few facts for all campaigners.
1)Tobacco kills Eight Lakh Indians every year.
2)Consumption of Tobacco (Bidi, Cigarette, Gutka, Paan
Masala, etc.) causes Cancer leading to Death.
3)Innocent children 8-10 years first start consuming
tobacco after getting wrongly influenced by Tobacco
ads featuring Bollywood stars. These children later
on become drug addicts to charas, brown sugar, etc.
4)Indian Parliament has banned advertisement (in
newspapers, magazines, TV channels, radio,theatres,
posters, etc.) of all types of tobacco (bidi,
cigarette, cigar, gutka, paan masala, etc.).
Good Luck to all campaigners
Thanks
Yours sincerely,
Sandeep

why Vivek?
by bhavik on May 22, 2003 09:31 PM

its kind of ironic, but Vivek in his very first film, Compnay, has been smoking bd's for all three hours

Practice what you preach!
by sameera on May 22, 2003 02:49 AM

How on earth can Vivek do an ad on non smoking when he himself smokes in all and every film he acts in. One has to practice what they preach and not just say or do something because you are in the position of doing so. Even if he doesn't smoke in real life, that image of him smoking in movies is what young people watch an idolize. So he better stop contradicting himself.

example is better than precept
by sandeep on May 21, 2003 02:29 PM

this ad film will hopefully be a shot in the arm for non-smokers like me.

i once went to a film set, where i saw the director and top stars smoking without even a "may i?"

non-smokers in the film industry should take a stand that they wont shoot with smokers !!

if the film fraternity cleans up its own house first, such ads will have a lot more meaning and impact
