Devdas not making it to the Oscars
by N.E. Joseph on Feb 17, 2003 09:06 PM

With all due respect, Bhensali's Devdas was a classic in every sense of the word. It was the epitome of Indian Cinema and all that comes with it. The work and energy that went into making Devdas was lost to the American jury who decide which foreign film gets nominated. Fine. Unfortunately, maybe they just didn't get it and maybe it was not promoted in the way it should have been. Indians should take a moment out of their very hyper-critical lives every now and then and appreciate a work of art when they see it. Let's give credit where credit is due shall we? Enough of this diatribe against filmakers and actors who are doing their best in an industry that is poverty-stricken when it comes to writing scripts and making films. Wake up to other possibilities of making films. Devdas deserved several Oscars in my book.

Devdas Undeserving

It serves Devdas right! First of all, I don't know what SLB was thinking when he made this trash of a movie! I think that TLOBS should have been sent as India's entry to the Oscars. It would have had a better chance. Not garbage like Devdas!

DEVDAS - BANKIM CHANDER CHATTERJI MUST BE CRYING IN HIS GRAVE
by MG Kapoor on Feb 17, 2003 08:54 PM

Sir,

In the first place I wonder how could at all India send Devdas as its entry for the Oscar. The film is plane insult to the author of the book. Original Devdas starring KL Sehgal and to a lesser extent the one starring Dilip Kumar were real tribute to the author. It wasn't Devdas at all. It may be Amar Das, Arjun Das or for that matter any other Das. But it certainly wasn't Devdas. The Media made it a success else it is a failure. Poor Bankim Chander Chattrji must be crying in his grave. Or is it that Mr. Bhansal has links so that it could be sent as official entry!! In India every thing can be purchased for money and Mr. Bhansali thought he could purchase outside world too. What a shame!!!

Regards

Devdas - Oscar - no way!
by Andrea on Feb 17, 2003 08:34 PM

I had predicted this even when they were sending the movie to be CONSIDERED for nomination. What is the jury in India thinking? Candy floss hindi movies do not win, will never win! Try sending some more substantial fare like classic Malayalam movies that actually have a thought-provoking plot, great acting and finely etched out characters. Perhaps its time the jury was changed to some forward thinking people of the nation!

lagaan v/s devdas
by Hardcorerahmanite on Feb 17, 2003 08:28 PM

Lagaan is a 100 times better film than devdas, it has good performaces, excelleant music and most importantly shows the love for cricket which is played like mad in India. Devdas is just another good for nothing love story which drags itselfs and tries to capture the viewers attention by big sets and expensive costumes....however this is not what the average viewer wants. They want entertainment....love stories are just out and true to life stories are in.

Devdas's nomination for Oscar
by Antesh Sinha on Feb 17, 2003 08:09 PM

Devdas didn't stand a chance by any means. The movie was so fake. Still can't believe why the novel was famous at all. A stupid movie like Devdas should never be forwarded for Oscars!! We need movies like Monsoon Wedding.

Devdas

Its a good news that Devdas has not got the oscar nomination bcoz it was not a movie of calibre of Mother India, saalam bombay, laagan(all the 3 movies were nominated is Oscars.)
Baring from the sets the movie lacked soul.Sharukh Khans acting is monotonus.I have never seen any actor who hams so much.
