Though Devdas could not make it to the final list of the oscars, it still remains a well directed movie. One should not compare it with Lagaan as the two had different subjects, moods and messages. Secondly we Indians should also not expect an Indian movie to reach the final five of the Oscars every year.
I am sure we don't need to judge our movies by judges who have different traditional values, mindsets, interests and lifestyles. Devdas has won international acclaim & has swept all the Indian awards besides a few international awards.
So let's not try to squash a brilliantly presented movie with some very good acting from all the lead actors in Devdas. Let's keep our fingers crossed that maybe someday an Indian movie will win an Oscar .... and if not SO WHAT ??? .
Devdas was made for an Indian audiuence, with rich costumes and a fancy cast ---if India wants to compete at an International level, then cut the embarrassing dance and song numbers, cease the exaggeration of love stories, and start making films that are worthy of viewing. Even Lagaan had some song and dance numbers which were totally uncalled for but for the most part, it had far more substance than Devdas. I can just imagine that Devdas will win a variety of awards in India as a consolation prize at having being snubbed by the international world of film making. Unfortunately, the film producers will not learn a lesson from this grave mistake and will continue with thier pathethic producitons.
One suggestion - if India cant make good and NORMAL films (it has the talent to) then dont-save your money and feed the poor.

Devdas is a sub-average film targeted at those who mistake over-acting, poor scriptwriting, pathetic direction and bollywoodisation of India classics for a film worthy of the Oscars. That Devdas was rejected came as a relief. It is sad that many of you consider a film that has only impressive sets and a big budget to boast of as a good quality film. In fact, with people like you who support such films, you can be assured that there will be no incentive for Indian film-makers to improve.
The reason Devdas failed has nothing to do with the fact that it is the story of a loser. It may have something to do with the fact that it has no soul. One doesn't feel for the characters......all they do is shout anyway.
It is visually gorgeous but that doesn't make a good film.
the commercial success and cash ringing registers does not necessarily ensures supremacy of the movie over the not so successful one. Nominating Devdas for oscars was not the right move in the first place itself, when you had a substance like "kannathil mutham mital" and for that matter even devgun' bhagat singh. Gloss may attract but its only substance that holds. Mind its oscar not filmfare that you are fooling around.
I was extremely disappointed to see Devdas not make it to the best foreign language Oscar shortlist. I think the film producers could have done better marketing, i.e. wider U.S. theatrical release (the movie only had smaller, film festival showings, albeit to sold-out theaters, and they could have released that divine soundtrack (including the remix version!) since the buzz had overflown for months! Instead, I think the producers just sat down and expected a Lagaan-like miracle. Tooo bad, coz in my book Devdas-movie, soundtrack, and remix soundtrack top all lists for 2002!
Not surprised to see DEVDAS failing at Oscar. The difference lies in the fact that 'Bhansali made an ordinary film with large costumes out of a classic while Amir Khan made a classic out of an ordinary subject'
