That mentality is still biggest stumbling block in country's development

Nothing wrong in what he said. He says if 20 million people travel overseas every year, how come only 12 million people pay income tax? He's saying that Indians are chronic tax evaders and that majority of income tax payers are salaried individuals who pay taxes because TDS is compulsorily deducted. Everything he said is true. If Indians start honestly paying taxes, then the tax rates can be reduced further.

Many people who travel abroad stay with their children, so they need not be high earners to travel overseas. Jaitley has not understood this simple fact. Majority of young tourists also go to places like Thailand, Sri Lanka etc where the trip itself costs only Rs 30-40000. Anyone can afford that. Jaitley should analyze the people who go on high end trips to known the true position.

Tourism, car buying etc can all be done by people earning between 4-5 lakhs a year and with tax saving schemes, very few would need to pay tax.

Jaitley , in front of a Harvard audience has simply branded all Indians as crooks and insulted the entire nation.

There is an idiom in Sanskrit "yathaa raja tathaa prajaa&qu
by chanakya maurya on Oct 16, 2017 01:06 PM

Roughly translated :

Like king like people.

Bharatvarsh has the misfortune of bhrusht leaders since attaining independence.

Btw, the professionals like CAs, doctors, lawyers, consultants, etc., as well as the business community and the industrialists, seldom pay the full tax whereas the salaried person is cornered and squeezed.

Even some elements in the department itself is often a part of the whole game of hoodwinking.

It is high time this issue is dealt with with much more strictness rather than creating a jungle of innumerable laws making the lives of honest taxpayers miserable.

If FM reads this posting directly.. the biggest reason why many evade tax because there is no accountability and transparency on how that money is spent.. If i pay INR XXX as tax in a year, i know that more than 50% gets into the pockets of fraudsters and scamsters. I will be going in a scooty where as these scamsters who are local corporators, MLAs, municipal or corporation officials all travelling in Toyotas and Hondas .. Even after paying tax , i know that i will be travelling on the pothole roads and most important any thing happens to me , no govt nor its agency will come to me or my family's rescue.. In a country it is better to live a life of a glorified poor than a silent suffering middle class.. Trust this advocate turned politician will understand the pain and agony of honest tax payers and work to bring more transparency on how tax money is spent and also make politicians and political parties pay income tax..

You are wrong. People don't buy Toyotas and Hondas with tax money. They buy it with bribes collected from various sources. The tax money is very closely audited by CAG so there is no scope for siphoning it off.

Do we need such arrogant FM, have we chosen BJP for abusive people of India. Is Govt. is meant only to increase taxes at each time, without looking after the tax payers. What for we should pay taxes-just to get insulted at each time and for whom-no effort is made to control unwanted population.
We are paying taxes just to feed politicians and ever increasing salary, perqs. and pension of govt. servants.

Ek dum sahi hai. Cars ki details de raha hai lekin who is purchasing them he is not seeing that. More than 80% of the cars belong to the politicians who never pay the taxes. Even the municipal ward corporators own SUV's that he will never probe . Sab saale chor hai. Narrow tax base hi baat karta hai, Out of 125 crores 70% are farmers, no tax, almost 20% are below poverty , so no taxes, phir ghanta jo bach rahe hai wo tax bhar rahe hai. Hope yeh calculation Jaitely gadhe ko samajh aaye.
