MNREGA
by arungopal agarwal on Oct 17, 2014 04:17 PM  | Hide replies

Govt. must finish all subsidies and bring a scheme employing at least one member of a family as a social security, give everyone a chance to live with dignity and adding to GDP, instead of feeding people free and at tax payers cost. Whether is is MNREGA or some other scheme.

Oaf, the NREGS does exactly what you have tried to prescribe - employing at least one member of every poor family as social security for the family (and also to create social assets in terms of infrastructure - mostly agricultural infrastructure)!

Do not bleat before reading !

This article is hollow are simply a joke!!!

This person puts BJP's point of view. And using the phrase "skill development", he forgets to mention what he meant by this phrase. During Bajpayee's time, people from rural area used to flock to the cities. Cities were overcrowded causing a lot of pollution. Now, UPA was able to contain that population in its own place. The rural India was developed like never before. Along with that, wages were raised from Rs. 69/day in 2006 to Rs. 214/day in 2013. Thus, the purchasing power of the rural population was increasing. 90 crore mobiles, TVs are the example of rural prosperity. Poverty reduced a big time.

Who were afraid of this? Ambanis and Adanis. They had to pay more to their labors, otherwise they were going back to home and working on their fields.

Here the writer talks much about "tax payers money". Who is giving that money? The same rural populace. They are earning and they are paying taxes by buying products, in some cases income taxes too.

India changed a lot from 2004 to 2014 and for good. I found electricity in most of the rural villages. Here the writer is talking about "skill development". Making roads is not a "skill"? Making toilet is not a skill?

So why are you giving this BJP like funny arguments?

Corruption is everywhere in India from top to bottom, atleast in this case the middleman mostly in villages are getting few of that. So, each of every villages someone is getting few money rather than the top politicians sitting on the top grabbing all. & even in terms of economics, having money in the hand of poor also effects in the GDP growth, if the GDP growth is the criteria, as those poor people will purchase few tax payable goods rather than stayed within the village & spend money only on agricultural products.
The main problem is that it is of UPA’s pet project. So rectify few things give the name of LORD Nathuram Godse rural development scheme, & make it a NDA’s project.

NAREGA- The vote purchase scheme
by Crusader on Oct 17, 2014 03:27 PM

UPA and its brilliant FM Mr.Chidu devised this excellent scheme to purchase votes by public money. Has anyone in the previous govt. or people like Mr. Mander ever given a score card of the work done in NAREGA. I have never come across any such thing in last 5 years. Yes every now and then they will tell how much money was disbursed(looted). And now they wanted FDI for everything. If at all NAREGA should have been used to build rural infrastructure, backend supply chain as food godowns, irrigation facilities and many other jobs. But Chidu & MMS need Walmart to do this so that their votes remain intact and the flow of this ill-gotten money continues for ever. There are so many people who work in cities and go to village every quarter just to get half the amount of the NAREGA and the balance half goes to the officials, sarpanch etc.

Public distribution of tax payers' money!
by eCommon Man on Oct 17, 2014 03:14 PM

You said it right, Mr. Srinivasan. 'NREGA is to create a pool of unskilled workers and keep them unskilled in perpetuity'! In addition, it's a scheme to create and maintain a long lasting vote bank!

After all, it's no politician's hard earned money. So, enjoy free meals in the name of the poor and make/them dumb too!

Once there was a (in)famous mega give away to the poor and farmers by a very 'concerned' Janardhan Poojary! At the end of the 'mela' no one knew where the thousands of crores disappeared! IT turned out to be a faster 'distribution' ever!

These can happen only in India! Time to put an end to not just NREGA but any such blunders!

The author is absolutely right. Modi is right in planning for dilution or better scrapping of NREGA. It encourages lethargy and sense of entitlement in the villagers. They get freebies and who pays for it; we taxpayers and who benefits the most, scheming politicians who rake in the moolah by employing phantom labours. Modi is going to create more jobs and let these people work and earn rather than sleep and earn.

Abolish MANREGA
by vasudevan krishnamachari on Oct 17, 2014 02:43 PM

The author has put it correctly, govt doles must help people become independent,Spend the funds wisely, todays news that 50% of stipend paid for trainees for the first two years is welcome, for those rural elders who cannot be absorbed by the organized sector, a mini employment exchange for daily wages earners in agri sector can be opened at panchayat levels and the same labour employed in govt schemes like toilet building, warehouse const and community development works etc.It should be min sustenance amount and should not tempt able/lazy people to leave their current jobs.

Dear Modiji,
Please scrap this type of schemes designed by UPA. This is a utter waste of tax payers money towards Middleman and local politicians.
