Mr Rajive , I am very sure that you are only the bookish person , and never worked on daily wages, so you never understand the pain of being poor, You are very much worried about tax payer money , like they are only funding nation and running this nation. And of course you belong to top community who believes that every one should be your servant available at very cheep price to clean your toilets. The main benefiter of this great & noble scheme are those who came from lower cast, hence that is the main reason to oppose this scheme. Your all blog is due to shear prejudice mindset of typical upper case. If government will even try to close this scheme, BJP will be washout for ever from this country. Your logics of giving funds is completely fake and the amount which is spent on MANEREGA is very much less that the subsidy which is given to Diamond merchants, where nobody put any question mark.
So I request you please do not try to full public. Closure of MANEREGA means increasing slums in the Major City's. It will lead to more disastrous problems to planed urbanization, social economical structure.
Ravi Kumar.

Like govt should cut all safety net for weaker sections, and use that money to build 'infrastructure' for industries etc etc.
Other than that how can someone oppose such a successful scheme!

NREGA boondoggle
by Bodh Ramdeo on Oct 19, 2014 06:34 AM  | Hide replies

"...that means the idea behind NREGA is to create a pool of unskilled workers and keep them unskilled in perpetuity.."

India's first Finance Minister Sharmugga Chetty had proposed increasing literacy from 10% to 90% within 10 years and budgeted the Funds for it.

Instead, the arrogant idiot Nejru nixxed the idea, saying "the country could not afford all those ""literates""...meaning peasants don't need education to dig dirt.

So his Khangriss party connived to keep the poverty-stricken aam aadmi illiterate and ignorant in perpetuity..always dependent on Khangriss Sarkar.

So today, after seven decades of Khangriss rule, almost 70% of the aam aadmi are either totally or functionally illiterate.

Is is 1000 times yet? Once it becomes 1000, it will become truth.
A challenge to you. Show me a credible source for this quote. If you do, I will stop posting in rediff forever. If not, will you?

Biased Nature of Resposible Authorities
by AKSHAY JAIN on Oct 18, 2014 05:08 PM

This article indicate about biased behaviors of 40 economists, who wrote in favor of NEREGA. We know, they are congressi pawns. This culture is developed and natured by congress in India, where responsible authorities misguided whole country by favoring wrong policies of government, just for vote bank politics.Modi must expose these economists with their intensions and must remove them from their highly paid jobs.

Rajeev Sreenivasan has directed
by piri on Oct 18, 2014 04:40 PM

his plaint that the NREGS be scrapped altogether (instead of seeking the more obvious remedy of trying to address its weaknesses) at the commoners who read his columns.

That ought to be expected alright, considering how every columnist has his/her own bunch of commoners who are ignorant about the topics of discussion following him or her with their ignorant admiration.

But perhaps Rajeev Sreenivasan could have made himself truly credible if he had sought to engage or dispute the arguments of Ms. Jean Dreze, foremost social scientist with regard to the need and efficacy of public support schemes such as the NREGS!

None among those who know enough about public schemes for the needy would contest the credentials of Ms. Jean Dreze in this regard; and Rajeev Sreenivasan would surely belong to the bracket of those who know enough about such schemes.

It is all the more puzzling then why Mr. Sreenivasan has not sought to make even a passing mention of Ms. Dreze's positions on the NREGS, let alone try to contest them!

As a person coming from the village,I would expect the the present Government to continue with NREGA which has immensely benefitted the villagers. The author's argument are mostly flawed. It is possible he has made made some comment sitting at newdelhi.
