Excellent analysis

This is a very good analysis of the so called 'benefits' that come from opening up the FDI in retail. Walmart is not something like Big-bazar or some of the big retailers that we already have. Walmart sources most of its wares from China and sell the same here at a dirt cheap price. It may very well benefit the rich and moneyed class here who will obviously be happy, but the cost will be that, the small manufacturers, artisans and other businesses will die out or vanish in a period of may be 5-10 yrs if not immediately. That will add the misery of the poor and people dependent on small scale businesses. Those who are rooting for walmart like stores in India may well take some to think, in the USA even a pin or a pencil or pen is MAde in china. There is nothing 'MADE in USA' available now.Do you want India to come to such a pass? India cannot withstand such a situation.

it's because 'Made In USA' was always over-priced. there's a good possibility that 'Made In India' inventory will surpass china; of course, if the quality succeeds that of china.

What is your agreement that this will be true. Giving carte blanche both in wholesale and retail. Why so much inflation?

Unbelievable truth

A Country of 120 crore people is scared of a Multinational Retailer called Walmart coming to India! Those who fear Walmart may please stick to Kirana retailers and street vendors to protect them from becoming insolvent. Others happily do business with Multi national retailers. This will certainly solve problem. If I am right MMS has not made it mandatory to shop only with Walmart & others. Cheer up guys.

Walmart was caught recently in Mexico with their bag of dirty tricks. As someone who lives in the US, I can tell you they are not as glamorous as you think. If you can, please watch the documentary WALMART, THE HIGH COST OF LOW PRICE

they imported cheap chinese products that don't last or have health risks....in the meantime this killed manufacturing jobs, retailor and other support staff and walmart paid lowest wages to sales boys .

this is one of the root causes of making USA the biggest debtor in he world.

Big Bazaar
by superstrongbody on Sep 25, 2012 11:27 PM  | Hide replies

Recently while standing in the Que for bill payment I saw a gentleman standing in front of me had more than 10 Talcum powder tins, 5 each of Pepsi & Sprite 2 ltres bottles, more than ten packets of Kurkure and other eatables etc in his shopping cart. Looking at the goods he bought I was thinking that his family was an undivided joint family comprising many members. But when I asked he laughed and said he is a small trader in a nearby village who purchases goods from the Mall every wednesday and sell in his shop for higher margin. He appears to be very happy that BB has come to his town which increased his profit. I am still at loss to understand how small traders like the one I saw will lose if Walmart opens in the town!

Now that FDI in retail is rolling, the first movers will cash in on their investments by selling out to foreign players ( Bharti, Reliance, Aditya Birla and Biyani etc.). This is the moment they were waiting (and lobbying for).

Even American farmers are victimised
by palanki narayana on Sep 25, 2012 09:08 AM

In USA agriculture is a capital intensive activity heavily subsidised by the government. If the subsidies are removed, the American farmers will starve due to the low price thay get from Walmart for their produce. If a fair price is assured, there is no need for subsidies.

Wal Mart Phenomenon
by Sudarshan Nityananda on Sep 25, 2012 09:05 AM  | Hide replies

In the US, even the poorest families have an old car to commute to the shopping mart , which could be in the suburbs.

This won't be the case in India since we hardly have any parking space , nor do many of us have cars to go far out.

The local nearby retailer will still hold the upper hand, as many of us buy things once in a few days unlike in the US where they buy for a full month

As usual, the big retailers will only be partially successful here. The current crop of Indian retail Cos are all making hefty losses.

Habits change Sudarshan. When i was in Chennai (and i cannot speak Tamil), i realized the convenience (and financial sense) of buying from Big Bazaar (which also had good parking space) than buying from vendors, who would fleece. After moving to Mumbai, i had no choice but to go to the Kirana store as there are not so many large format stores. With better planning, it makes better sense to buy from a large format store.
