The sources of funding of these bridges
by Ujwala Kulkarni on Oct 10, 2011 09:08 PM  | Hide replies

Not too difficult to build a bridge provided you have the funding. The technology has been there for decades. What about the sources of funding of these and their cost effectiveness. That is to say if toll was charged on per passenger basis how many of these will give reasonable return on investment. Panvalnadi bridge is a part of the Konkan railway network which was funded by various states through equity participation. Huge amount of toll has to be paid to travel on the Konkan railway or even to cross the minuscule Thane creek bridge on the Mankhurd-Belapur track. Does anyone - say someone like Shreedharan who is credited with success of so many projects (whose bridge failed spectacularly in Delhi not so long ago) - have an explanation?

I think you should not drag sreedharan into this. Dont know about Konkan railway and its cost but have you even seen Delhi metro? Even if one bridge fell, he has done so amazing work for people in Delhi and surrounding cities. I am sure he learned form that mistake and will not repeat that.

"Huge amount of toll has to be paid to travel on the Konkan railway or even to cross the minuscule Thane creek bridge on the Mankhurd-Belapur track. Does anyone "

Someone needs to bear the cost, Ujwala. In case of Konkan bridge, respective state Govt. paid it up for people.

You know what ? Konkan railway is in loss only because of interest it pays for loans. If loans are reduced, the project is a huge success. So much business income is there in that line other than passenger travel incomes. To travel, passengers are paying almost double the amount compared to other railways there by reducing the burden. Both people and Govts. in fact pays it up.

For Thane Creek, your own Govt. should do some thing in this other than being an example of best corrupt state Govts.

What Sreedharan have to do in this ?

Now regarding a bridge fell, Sreedharan took full responsibility eventhough such a nitty gritty thing should be taken care of his juniors. Type N.Indian idiocrazy is involved.

How many people can take his place if he is ready to resign even ?

It is attitude like this of you people, what make you and your slum like living standards.

Amazing rail Bridges, but ....
by Ramaswamy Nagarajan on Oct 10, 2011 08:21 PM

How about the alignment on either side of the bridges? Is the track straight at least for a KM or curved to reduce the length of the bridge. If curved, one day or the other it would be a death trap like the Ashtamudi Lake Train Accident i Kerala, Mokama bridge train accident in Bihar and a few more alike. Who have certified for their safety? A bad driver will take 100s if not 1000s to heaven along with him,. Have the Railway safety commissioner taken this aspect into consideration?
