Suggestion to tackle the mess
by anil kohli on Mar 28, 2011 02:31 PM  | Hide replies

One suggestion, why cant government and traders offer a sales tax cut for those who carry eco friendly bags from home to shop, may be in tune of just 1%.Govt should promote the retailers/malls/hypers to use eco friendly bags by offering them 1% sales tax incentive and if using plastic for carrying the goods then a penalty of 3% Trade Tax.I know it can increase the red tapism more but probably that will help.

I just asked one simple question: what is the viable alternative to plastic bags. And rediff found it so offensive that they simply deleted my message. Is rediff hiring all under-graduates?
Awating your deletion....

JUTE is a viable option...
In Gandhinagar (capital of Gujrat) Plastic in bag form is BANNED and cannot be used and shopkeepers have started using other means but still small traders like vegetables and kirana stores are yet to start use of anyother means and so people carry there own bags... even the Reliance mall does not give any bag it asks people to carry own bags

We are like this only
by Bheemasenachar Koppar on Mar 28, 2011 02:01 PM

We are like this only. We do not resolve, if we do, we are not allowed to practice, if we do, then branded as exhibitionists. If SC makes a rule, we laugh and say that it is impractical to impose such bans. We teach, preach, but put to practice only when forced. We do not litter when abroad - we follow rules there, down here, it is my country with freedom without boundary (this is how we think) and spread plastic in possible manner, and shamelessly say, foreign countries are so clean and what good rules. We are like this only.

We have to Protect our Country !!

We can protect our country soon otherwise times not given permit to do all this, we cannot banned plastic in one day but we can stop use of plastics one by one items, it was a very gud step by SC to banned GUTKA products, becoz of GUTKA 30% of the sewage and garbage Problem in india , and we are facing very bad image outside of the country, so plz 100% banned GUTKA from India, but i m seeing that our GOVT is not a very much interested to banned GUTKA product or even TOBBACO items, otherwise they can Bannded easily, Govt can REMOVE the Poor people from his home ,so he can banned gutka also, but we have doubt about govt intentions. in india our MUNCIPALITY Deptt. should closed and do privatised otherwise no use only wastage of money. In the Capital city of India the position of garbage ,waste, drainage line is so dirty or we can say its not a upto the mark, so do some thng for the country..Plz banned plastics.

One thing I agree is the proposal to privatize the Municipalities all over India. What a proposal! fantastic! Outsourcing at the best can happen in this country.

by kalyan ramanathan on Mar 28, 2011 01:26 PM

plastic bags are a big no for me as much as possible . once i was in a well known mall in bangalore where i told them at the cash counter not to pack my shopped items in a plastic bag & i can carry it as it did not require to be packed in plastic bag . they refused to let me go without the hazardous bag stating the i will not be let out of the store by the security if i did not carry my purchase in a polybag . that was ridiculous

How India can ban the plastics
by Seshan Pathravi on Mar 28, 2011 01:18 PM

If a person is cautious, it is difficult for the thief to steal an item from him. Similarly as long as the plastic bags are manufactured it cannot be banned. Asking the people to avoid is nothing but foolishness. The police (!!!) must search the factories manufacturing this, should be locked out.
In India, neither the police nor the Goverment would do this and hence the people will continue to use it.
