Missing information
by Alok Kumar on Feb 27, 2011 12:45 AM

While it is a matter of great pride that India's commercial capital made it into this list, the article has failed to mention a unique distinction that Mumbai has that no other candidate in this list possesses.

That distinction is that Mumbai is the only city where people openly defecate on public property at all times of the day and night!

Yet Mumbai makes the cut and is at the 6th spot on this list!

Amazing!!

Bombay is 6th most expensive even on nominal comparisons. If you adjust for PPP, Bombay is far more expensive than any of these.

Rediff Needs Improvement
by keith sharma on Feb 25, 2011 12:26 AM  | Hide replies

Rediff newswriters and editors needs some serious and immediate improvements in terms of framing those headline sentences. See what the headline has to say "Mumbai 6th most expensive office location " as If it trying to say about Mumbai's 6th Most Expensive Office location, top 5 also being in Mumbai only- whereas what it intends to say is that Mumbai has world's 6th Most expensive of Office locations.
A single miss of comma and articles and you change the meaning of the story.

Mumbais infra is far better than other Indian cities... But Govt is not able to provide infra to millions of people migrating to Mumbai. Center Govt. should give appropriate fund and Mumbai will shine brighter on the World Map. Mumbai is the Best.

There is no use of advocating for Mumbai against the devils (Politicians). They will ruin the city for their dirty politics. Others feel that Mumbaikars want to keep them away from dream city and cry foul. So better to think in other direction, get everybody in and provide more funds for Mumbai.

Consumerism
by neildsoza on Feb 24, 2011 11:41 AM  | Hide replies

The ONLY reason we have the BPO industry today is because of cost advantage - cheap labour availability. IT, BPO industry brought foreign currency - Dollars and Euros.

The foreign remittances fueled businesses and consumerism. SO there were more people buying apartments. Because there was disposable cash and the rates were affordable. Like you could own a decent apartment in Pali Hill for under 50 lacs back in the 2000s.

Now because of this madness called real estate, all prices gone up - vegetables, groceries , milk every thing. Because shop keepers have to recover the money they pay as rent / or used to buy the place.

So what costed 10 rupees costs 25 today. The net rate of the commodity probably increased by 1 or 2 rupees. But you end up paying 14 rupees for the cost of the place.

So a cup of coffee costs 25 rupees. Cost of coffee did not change much. But the coffess shop owner paying rentals that are 5 times more than what he used to pay.

So you are paying real estate costs everywhere on every thing - from the meal you eat through movie you watch.

So as the cost of living increases, people tend to demand higher salaries. Higher salaries means , lower margins for the companies. So they shift bases to other countries because there is no cost advantage anynore.

Thats what happening everywhere in IT and BPO. When dollars and Euros stop flowing in, there will no takers for these 'LUXURIOUS APARTMENTS IN PRESTIGIOUS LOCALITIES' costing ridiculous 10 crores and so

So the survey says
by neildsoza on Feb 24, 2011 11:33 AM  | Hide replies

So , its cheaper to go setup your business in Paris or Switzerland are cheaper than in Mumbai. lol. Why not people doing it ? I mean , Paris and Zurich have 100 times better infra structure and very clean cities to live. And any country welcomes investors. So I guess people should go and setup their businesses there instead of squandering their funds in a greedy Mumbai.

As recent as in 2000, the cost was not this much. Mumbai was nowhere in terms of office space ( in the top 100). Suddenly in 10 years , it became Number 5.

Greed. Greed and more Greed.

New Papers have special sponsored editions for real estate. All the rates are hypothetical , dictated by the realty mafia of Mumbai.

sure man i have been to both the cities u mention.paris mainly revolves around the roads leading from eiffel tower which is the main paris.parisians themselves have told me that the cost of living is so high in paris that it is impossible for any french to reside there.they reside in the suburbs and take the metro to work otherwise there are huge trafic jams and takes hours to reach the work place just like any big city.there are also ghettes in paris where all the immigrants are put up and they are filthy.as for zurich i saw junkies poking needles inside themselves near the bahnofstrasse leading to the railway station.there the main form of public transport is tram .mumbai already has a population twice that of whole switzerland.though the cities are beautiful they are unbelievably expensive.
