Resignations under Nehru
by Flexible Bird on Feb 14, 2011 08:26 AM  | Hide replies

If you read profile of all ministers listed, you will notice that many FM had differences with Nehru and many of them have resigned from the post. That means there was serious problems with Nehru. He wanted to have his own policies and wanted to have his own style. If you really read the history and indian economics, nehru is a big reason for India's failure at earlier stage. Because of Nehru we lost karachi, We lost kashmir and had china war... he favored himself... Sardar Patel should have been our prime minister

if we had better prime ministers we would have had better finance ministers;though some of them were brilliant they were to act under the shadows of dictatorial or even tyrant prime ministers.the only exceptions were m.m.singh under mr narasimha rao and to a limited extent mr desai and mr sinha.the gist of what you said of the first three ministers in nehru's government bears ample testimony to his own words in that article in modern review in 1937.disguising himself in the third person he wrote,"jawahar has all the makings of a dictator in him-vast popularity,a strong will, ability, hardness,an intolerance of others and a certain contempt for the weak and the inefficient...Caesarism is at the door...it must be checked." that much feared Caesarism was never checked.that may be due to the adulation he received from his political mentor mahatma gandhiand after that 'light' had gone from all the sycophants he allowed himself to be surrounded with. nehru had in him this split personality,a sort of dr jekyl and mr hide, though he always abhorred the later and struggled to keep him under his gentleman's mask.

You are damn right. Fully agree. Sardar Patel was the actual hero and desh bhakt. Nehru joined freedom fight and govt for his power and money.

Thank you for putting this in very nice form.

Actually Netaji was the right man for PM, but as per popular saying, Neheru played a trick to confine him in USSR jail. Even ppl say, the black hand Neheru is there behind death of Lalbahadur Shastri and Shyamaprasad Mukherjee. Sardar Patel was one of the best candidate but to honest to get rid of Neheru.

We are yet to find a FM who honestly believes that richer people must pay more tax. Film stars, cricket players and big businessmen should pay atleast 50% of their gross earnings as IT. We are yet to find a FM who thinks more about controlling inflation than increasing GDP growth rate.

LDC ? or FM ?
by Anand sodo on Feb 13, 2011 11:26 PM

No Finance Minister of Independant India has ever functioned as one. They have all toed the lines of their party, Vote Bank politics and cheap Regionalism. Even after 60 plus years of independance our FMs in every Budget make it a point to tinker with the rates of exice duty/ additional taxes whatever...3% less on biscuits!!!! 5% more on toffees!!!!what is all this? Why at all increase or decrease taxes?(when taxes are on a percentage basis - they automatically cover price increase of the product as well as the need for more taxes by the Government) on the same objects every now and then one FM reduces tax on biscuits the other (or even the same FM)in his next budget again increases the same tax!!!
In reality even a Lower Division Clerk of the Fin Ministry can give a better BUDGET to the nation!!!!!! without p[laying with the public and public psychology of the nation!!!!

If you look back the best finance minister that India ever had was Raja Todarnal, No one has dared t change his style not even British. He worked for Akbar for some thirty years ,wiped out corruption which Moguls inherited and got enormous revenues generated and for the first time in the history of India he linked the revenue to land holdings on scientific basis , organised meticulus records of Land and property, advised Akbar to keep a Mobile army- worlds first- Worked out a systematic order for administration - and worked out a compensation based on performance for all govt officers- advised Akbar to employ foreigners in custom to control corruption and better evaluation of goods to be exported- 5000 Portuguese to be precise,And brought India to hold 27% share in world trade.India hasd beaten any one hollow at that time. He created such a large surplus that Shahjahan was able to build Taj Mahal. He brought education to millions thru funding school and technical education- carpet weaving etc was his gift to India. Infact when once Akbars relation had used some of the state funds for his personal pleasure - on advice of Todarmal Akbar not only remove him from his job but sentenced him to prison and then ouster from The country. He and Akbar used to travel in the kingdom andcheck prices of essential goos and this system which FCI now follows was the brainwork of RAJA Todarmal. Even the Collector was his brainchild

What people conveniently forget is 1) It was on the Prime Minister P.V.N. Rao's directions (and IMF pressure) he did so, not on his own initiative, 2) It was only due to him that black money generation began running into billions of dollars, 3) It was on his watch that the rich became richer and the poor poorer, 4) It is because of him that efforts to bring back the billions of black money to India is stalled.

Best F M
by Charvak Chanyakk on Feb 13, 2011 05:56 PM  | Hide replies

Moraraji Desai was best F M, for Con-gress. He formulated and laid foundation of " Permit Raj", which created wealth for ruling party leaders, beaurocrats and Congress. He achieved it right under Nahru's nose. Nehru kept talking abvout hanging the corrupts on street lamp posts. This was important system for politicians of all colours. As for the country, Nobody cared before and nobody cares even today.

He was a meanminded person who only saw no wrong in what his family did.

He was very mean to industrialists like Tata and Birla who had succeeded after having gained favour of the British.

He was Bania first, Gujerati second and Indian third.

And he was viscious to those who crossed his path.

If you analyse the aftermath of budgets of PC you will realise the galloping inflation took place during his budgets. The fear of tax payers of higher taxation was prevalant during his period. He would have introduced food intake tax like the service tax. If you consume more than 10 handful at a time, for each extra handful additional 1% tax.

Many a times he was forced to roll back his various policies.

He was nicknamed 'Rollback Sinha' by the Congress.

Now that king of a monicar will soon go to the current FM who will of need have to rollback his service tax on Medical Care (they call him Misery Tax Mukharjeet) and service tax on pencils, sharpners, compass boxes and notebooks (Uneducated Tax Montreejeet)
