gender equality
by suresh chavan on Oct 12, 2010 08:57 PM  | Hide replies

Report may be true, but for that men are not responsible but women only. I may give an example for that. In most of the continents, women are strong. They drive truck, or any heavy vehicle. Is it visible in India? Women in western countries regularly excercise. Compared to those women, our women are lazy or much weaker. If you travel abroad, you will easily find above things and many many other things which will prove the report true. So, instead of criticising report, try to self-examine and improve.

Ask any Indian truck driver if he would allow his wife to drive the truck. And ask those women truck drivers of the western countries how much time they devote at home to make roti and sarsho ka shaag.

Namaskar!!
Indian ladies are not into this driving stuff becoz Indian men respect them!!!!!!!!!!
Western men want ladies to do all physical work so that they can grow in the intellectual field and thats the truth.
Also by nature women are not meant for hard physical work... no Indian will like to see his wife working hard as a driver in the hot Indian sun. Women in western countries do that kind of work only when they do not find any alternative. I myself spoke to a woman driver in California!!!!! Its the truth that all woman appreciate if their men do hard physical work and take care of the family. So it will be childish to say that western woemn are strong and Indian women are weak. The topic is well above these things. Indian women are always welcome in the intellectual field!!!!!!!!! I do not understand why our own people think so wrong about our own India. India is gr88888888!!!!! no doubt.

Strange paradox
by ganapathy raman on Oct 12, 2010 08:30 PM  | Hide replies

The nordic countries may well be in the forefront of gender equality, but in these countries, during old age, you just enroll into an old age home. There is no way your offspring are going to take care of you. So how do we rank them on this ? Maybe they are just practical ( or selfish to a sublime level) but thats the way it is. While Mr Amartya Sen might have won a Nobel for this theory on equality, I guess it was purely from a economic viewpoint. The hindu scriptures I believe have a lot of practical wisdom on the what the relationship between a man and woman should be, and I suppose they hold great value in these times. The feminists would not agree as its not too convenient, but these are time tested formulae for harmonius existence, unless abused of course.

Islamic scriptures also have similar practical "prescriptions" for man-woman relationships.

Feminists are just cheap western imitations. No originality. In what way are men and women equal? Just by wearing tite pants can equality be sought?

We are talking about equal opporunities in edication, economic participation, health. Men and women are not equal but that does not make women a leser being.

Survey is baseless and stupid.

India has women prime ministers , presidents and chief ministers. USA does not have any woman president so far.
So the survey of world economic forum is dubious.

Also many women are well placed in corporate companies occupying in some cases very high positions.

The survey seems to have gone off the track way too much

A quick read of all the comments on this article (mostly by men I am guessing) shows us the mindset that makes India's gender equality status so abysmal

Economic participation of Women in India
by Anup Mishra on Oct 12, 2010 08:03 PM  | Hide replies

Look at the kind of economic participation WEF has considered!! India lives in the village. Look at the village economy: farming, weaving, pottery making, herding, fishing, laundry work, vending, etc. in all kinds of work women actively participate with their counter parts. Traditionally, in the tribal/aboriginal culture of India, a matriarchal (mother-centric family) society is prevalent. Not only in post-Independent democratic India, but also in the medieval India women emperors have ruled the country, which is extremely rare in the world history.

So, how can WEF say that India is lagging behind in the economic participation of India??

yes they do farming, weaving, fishing etc. But can they choose who they want to marry, what they want or not want to do without their husband or fathers interference. and the women who ruled represent the royal families and dynasties, not the common women of India
