4G is not completely out. What is out is WImax which is billed as 4G. The speeds are not that great (3mbps download and 1 mbps upload).. slightly better than 3G (2 mbps hsdpa and 360 kbps upload)

Matter of couple of months and forced fraud services which Airtel is expert on imposing without the consent of the subscriber.
This is the best time for India to get the 3G services. The handset industry is now matured and have been introducing top end devices which will fully explore the 3G potential. Also the price of a 3G enabled handset now starts less than 10K which is good for the Indian market. It would have been disastrous if 3G was introduced in the times when handsets were having a low resolution screen and a small VGA cam. People would have avoided 3G just for the reason that they cannot afford high end 3G mobiles in those times.

Handsets are better and matured but what abt the cost of the service itself??? if its very expensive then the market will be not that good as majority in india cannot afford a high end service.... thats the point...

I believe the cost of service will be high initially. Eventually it will come down owing to competition.

You tell me one country in this earth which doesnt have citizens who doesnt expect all these...
Lets not even go that far, are you going to petrol station and telling "boss, i dont want subsidised fuel, i will pay the full amount".. chill dude..
1G - Analog technology (AMPS et al) 2G - Digital transmission (GSM, TDMA, CDMA et al) 3G - WCDMA (UMTS (aka the orginal 3G), HSPA, EVDO et al) 4G - OFDM (LTE, WiMax et al)
Rolling out 3G service is good, i think the real challenge which TRAI and Telecom ministry has ahead of them is to keep it affordable and for common man, then only we can boast that "India has done it". 65,000 crore that the telephone operators have spent is not charity, they will try their best to recover double of that in a short time, by making it very expensive and cheating common people.

u r ryt tht the operators will have to recover money and recover soon as in the next 2 or 3 years 4g will come in and is much superior to 3G. The catch is tht the big companies like vodafone and airtel have already used up their 2g spectrum. for growth they need more free spectrum for low end basic users in our rural areas. the answer to it is make 3G affordable to the medium end users so tht the youth and business people easily shift to 3G and use the 2G spectrum which will then be available for adding new basic users in rural areas and urban lower class. tht way they can make maximum profits. If they go the other way, in that case i am sure they will lobby to delay 4G tech and tht will be a bad move for the country and the economy

Sandeep,
I believe charging high for a service in which a company has monopoly is not cheating. It is pure business. When competition increases, they are forced to cut down their margins. Its all about demand and supply.

i doubt. there would be a data plan though. video calling, data packages, will be the main drivers.

only bsnl has started the 3g network already in india. airtel and the rest are in 2g in telephony. wimax has been introduced, also 3g internet services, but not 3g mobile services.
raja's scam is about selling spectrum for cheap, and favouring certain individuals in the process of selling spectrum for cheap, and thus depriving the government of revenue
the pricing is key to 3g. in 3g data transfer is easier, so they should be pricing it low, ot high. i wonder what the business/ tech analysts really intend to say - they manage to confuse the end user thoroughly.
