defects in article...
by abhishek agarwal on Jun 02, 2010 03:45 PM

1. Jazz costs about 7 lakhs
2. Only a fool would buy a used mercedes. A headlight replacement costs about 25K
3. Wrong pics of models shown
4. Even auto experts warn against buying used diesel models - most of diesels are used as taxis.
5. A new hatchback would be trouble free for at least 2 years, whereas a used sedan would cost you a lot in the long run - most used car dealers give limited warranty from 3 months to 1 year.
6. The warranty is limited to repair of the malfuntioning part and not replacement.

wrong pics
by abhishek agarwal on Jun 02, 2010 03:36 PM

the pics shown here are of skoda laura, which is sold seperately from skoda Octavia in India. Octavia looks much worse than Laura, which is what they are trying to hide. You cannot get a Laura for 3.5 Lakh. Worldwide, Laura is an upgrade of Octavia, why is rediff fooling people by showing wrong pics?

Pre-owned car....?
by Dattaprasad Prabhu on Jun 02, 2010 10:47 AM  | Hide replies

Why must you use this pretentive/illusive word "Pre-Owned Car"? In very simple and absolute terms it ought to be "Second-hand car". Why one should be ashamed of using this particular word? If one wants to be owner of the car, pretention or cloat begins here itself. Almost all car manufacturers, dealers and buyers, irrespective of first or second-hand car, seek for bank loan and still they feel uncomfortable in using the words loan, second-hand,etc,etc...

gaurav agarwal there is a difference in third world and developing world.
The term 'Third World' arose during the Cold War to define countries that remained non-aligned or not moving at all with either capitalism and NATO (which along with its allies represented the First World) or communism and the Soviet Union (which along with its allies represented the Second World). This definition provided a way of broadly categorizing the nations of the Earth into three groups based on social, political, and economic divisions. Although the term continues to be used colloquially to describe the poorest countries in the world, this usage is widely disparaged since the term no longer holds any verifiable meaning after the fall of the Soviet Union deprecated the terms First World and Second World. While there is no identical contemporary replacement, common alternatives include developing world and Global South and more recently Majority World.

hahaha, the reason is that pre-owned is more generic. Otherwise you have to say second hand, third hard, fourth hand, etc based on the number of name transfers

In UK it is called Used car with no of owners.
Such as 2010 model wit 1 owner
or 2005 model with 2 previous owners.
There is no need for second hand,Third hand etc.
No of owners are list in its Log book.
Such as previews owners 2 or previous owners 3 and the time they owned it, This defined by dates
bought and date sold.

used car???
by pranjal parikh on Jun 02, 2010 08:13 AM

well, the used car can be purchased from the company showrooms like maruti is having its pre-owned cars which gives warrenty as well. The bigger cars has high maintenance & spares cost. If car is 2-3 years old, it can be purchased. I own lancer of 2000 model since last 5 years but still i dont want to seel it. The cars like skoda/corrola are very reliable and works well for atleast 10 years and you save heavy cost of road tax, insurance & accessories. Convert it to CNG/LPG for fuel efficency.

Does this make sense in India
by sk ms on Jun 01, 2010 07:11 PM

Used car may be a big market in the went due to various reasons. When you buy a car that ran for 50K miles in US there are ways to validate it. Do we ahve in india ?
The ones listed in article are all run 100K plus for the price. Is that really worth to buy some one else problem? How about the maintenance ? Is the maintenance of a 7 yearls old skoda or corolla same as that of a new Spark or Ritz ? Do they give the similar fuel efficency ? Finally does one really need them ? The people who look for a car in 5lakh bracket are the ones who are seeking value for money. It doesnt matter if you can reach 0-60km in 3.6 seconds. Not in a hurru they can wait for few more seconds :). How about spare parts ? A car really starts giving troubles after 5-7 years. And the author is really suggesting to buy those troubles and start repairing them as long as you one them. Is this another paid article where the owners of these big machines have already extracted the juice out of them and want to dispose them and looking for vurnerable targets ? Again dont compare wetern market for used cars.. here people wont sell used cars as long as theya re usable .What they sell is only abused cars !. so beware before buying someone else problems

Pre owned cars
by Sheetal Kaur on Jun 01, 2010 04:11 PM  | Hide replies

Pre owned cars or used cars as it is called in UK is a big market well 80% of the public buys used cars, only 20% buys new ones.
Story here is different from that of India. All used cars when bought from a dealer must have valid MOT certificate (Ministry of transport test certificate of road worthy Known as MOT in short) unless it is not more then 3 years old, If it is even 1 day over 3 years it must accompany the valid MOT certificate( New cars are exempt from MOT for first 3 years) No excuses here,Full service history from the first year of on the road, must carry at least 6months of warranty and Log book of ownership.
It should not any pending fine from motoring offenses.
Mileage should be correct to date.
If bought from the owner directly in private sale Then It should have latest and valid MOT certificates to date If older the 3 years.
Owners log book.
Full service history.
No pending hire purchase balance left.
No Pending fines from Motoring offenses.
In case of private deal it is up to the buyer to check all the above.
Failing to do so and the seller giving wrong information then both parties can land in trouble with Department of Vehicle Licensing(DVLC) and Police.
So it is very safe to buy a used car either from a dealer or private owner.
In India doubt very much any road worthy certificates are issued and if the dealer or private owner will tell the truth to the buyer.
I would say save and go for a new Car rather then a used one.

After all it is your life that you are playing with, by riding in a metal box at high speed.
In an accident a cra will be turned into scrap but you will loose your life which can not be recycled.
A scrap car can be recycled.

Every 100,000 kms you need to spend 100,000 rupees on engine over-hauling.

That sound pretty standard.
All engines last approximately that much before they need a major overhaul.
A slightly more if well looked after.

Do you know the cost of maintenace for old cars?
by Kool Guy on Jun 01, 2010 03:53 PM

Funny, how could you suggest to get cars which are more thab 5 years old. Prima facie no banl loan is provided, insurance also plays trick and the cost of maintenance would bring you down to your knees. Better to get a car from a known source like relatives but obviously to stay away from pricy ones as Cost of maintenance would kill you.
