Weather Sale
by satya acharya on Jul 13, 2010 11:01 PM  | Hide replies

A Great old TELUGU poet of 70s " SRI SRI"wrote once "which is not eligible for poetry". Kukka pilla( Dog's Baby), Aggi pulla( match stick),Sabbu billa(Soap cake)on all you can tell poetry. You have to have only vision.
Now a days which is that you can't sell? Even land on moon,Dreams... all are sold.
You have to have only the brain to sell.

Good effort but...
by Vivek Chandra on Jul 13, 2010 03:53 PM  | Hide replies

The data input comes from IMD (Observations by unmanned or manned AWS). The models which have local or global domains run on IMD (or overseas) supercomputers. The weather outputs are routinely available from IMD website.

Express weather may sell the forecasts by putting more impactful slogans on it but the fundamentals of weather forecasting do not change. The whole world is still not sure when the Indian monsoon will fail. Is it tied up to el nino event of pacific or the Indian ocean dipole.

Selling weather forecasts is one thing, getting these forecasts right is quite another.

This is not true. I work for the Lankan parliament and we keep a close eye on Indian weather and economy. It is only IMD that can't predict the monsoon. There are three universities in the US and the US government who predicts it quite well. IMD just refuses to use the data or buy it. We buy the data because it gives us insight into Indian economic growth and prosperity.

You trust US universities because their models use IOD (Indian Ocean Dipole) as input for calculations. The very idea of IOD is very uncertain. Except for Saji et. al. paper in Nature, there has never been a strong case for its acceptance as an independent phenomenon. IOD is widely considered to be linked to the el nino event in the pacific. The el nino is tied up to the way you are able to define the inputs to it, namely the anomalies in lower level winds , upper level winds and the cloudiness in the central pacific.

US models and (US universities) sometime use cloudiness as the sole predictor of el nino - la nina event which is wrong. There are a few coupled models in the world which do forecast long term ocean atmospheric conditions, but they are far from perfect. The reason Indian monsoon is difficult to forecast is not only because it is too long term a forecast (and hence out of models' certainty regime) but also because the necessary coupling mechanism between pacific anomalies (viz. el nino) and the IOD is not fully understood.

MANIPULATION OF IMD'S DATA...

If the company is concerned about poor farmers, why charge for SMSes? Its nothing more than manipulation of IMD's work. Instead of opening a co. he could have strengthened IMD

any charitable cause needs to be self-sustaining. There is no free lunch. Rs.49 is a paltry sum compared to the benefits of this data.

Agreed but Rs 24 per SMS is too expensive. why cant this co. support IMD instead of creating a duplication?

Just like most of the people you are also trying to find fault with any new enterpreneure instead of encouraging them. We must congratulate and encourage them. They are doing a great job.

It is time we should adopt the "actual user pay" model. The cross subsidies should be completely eliminated as these only distort the taxing system

Great Work

I feel going forward, this fellow should be a serious contender for a national award - too early to give it away now - but the concept is terrific and he has successfully surpassed the teething problems.

This is the first concept I have come across where a huge business potential and a nobel social cause are so cohesive.

And why IMD close sharing information?? The satellites were launched using taxpayers money. They are meant to share his data.

The guy is customizing the information and also collecting more information to provide right information for his client.

Do you think IMD will ever do this kind of innovation. In US, the weather forecasters predict wind velocity and intensity for hurricanes when it is 1000s of miles away. Do you think this research was done only using US government aid??

Don't think that IMD will close displaying free data. Most countries have their Meteorological Department providing free weather data which is used by many others.

IMD itself can't predict weather to any reasonable accuracy in spite of having huge data and big manpower and equipment. They say it will rain tomorrow if it is raining toady! Genearally, their forecast for next 48 hours is what is happening at this moment. Complete Useless stuff!
