Bt. Technology
by Ganesh on Jan 30, 2010 07:53 PM  | Hide replies

Dear Readers,

Why are we do much worried about the technology. Unless we allow the technology how do we analyse its merits or de-merits. Farmers are the best judge as far as any agriculture technology is concerned and not the so called activists or NGOs. Let the farmers decide whether they need the technology or not.

I have one question. We have been seeing this article for the second time in a span of 3 days and there are so many anti-comments on this technology. How many of you are agri experts and do you have any proof to strengthen your allegations.

The technology provider has done bio-safety trials for the last 8-9 years before submitting its report GEAC. After detailed analysis the GEAC has approved the findings of the trials.

I challenge the so called "Experts" who have commented the technology to come out with their proof. Unless they have the proof about the Bt. brinjal technology the so called "experts" should not mislead the farmers and consumers. Your efforts would only take back the Indian agriculture sector 30-40 years backward. I would also tell the so called supporters of organic farming people that this technology is indirectly promoting organic farming because this technology would help in reducing the pesticide usage. Secondly we need to think do we have enough people in the rural areas to help the farmers in preparing organic manure etc.

Let us work together to take our nation forward and not backward.

Ganesh,

If BT-Brinjal would have been some electroic equipment ppl don't mind testing the technology.

Ofcourse Farmers are producers BUT remember we are the consumers, if there is no demand then there will not be any production.

P.hd in Genetic tech is not required comment on this.. there are millions of articles over internet and documents ppl do reaad those, and the people concerns are genuine, and we should respect that.

I searched about your claim that testing was done for abt 8-9year, I COUDN'T FIND THIS FACTS.. I SAW MANY ARTICLES STATING THAT TESTING WAS NOT DONE PROPERLY. Max test period was of 90days.. where as recommended was 36months.. half the life of goat / rabbit. Please check the facts before claiming.

Our agriculture is not performing well because Of WRONG GOVT Policies. The major cost for the farmers is pesticide. These prices were artificially jacked up so as to make the farming un-affordable.. Govt should byout these pesitcide companies and distribute the pesticide at dead cheap price then most of the farming problems will be solved.

72%(nearly 80CR) of ppl live in rural areas, many wonderful things can be done with this kind of manpower.

If our villages work as co-operative societies then we will have surplus agri production.

GM is not good and never will be.. its only good for Monsanto-mahyco and its employees and its share-holders. They want to make a profit at the cost of millions of farmers and public.

All you wanted to know about Bt brinjal
by Hebbar R on Jan 30, 2010 07:17 PM  | Hide replies

These MNCs with deep pockets are capable of manipulating decisions of the Govt. They are least bothered about the effects of the genetically modified products. After all, it will be the common man who will pay the price. There could also be tacit support from Pharma cos as they will develop suitable drugs for the complications that will arise from the consumption of BT products. It is probably just common sense that a poison for an insect could be poison for humans also - though probably at a much lower level. An imp case study would be the use of DDT. Decades ago, it was considered a wonder pesticide. After so much of its usage, it is now found that DDT is most harmful.

Before any approvals are given, all the committee members should be made to eat the genetically modified products for atleast 6 months and if they are not affected, then permission could be considered.

Bharat Brinjal
by jhonny k on Jan 30, 2010 07:13 PM

We have more than 1500types of brinjal.. we don't want to loose them at any cost. Moreover these BT brinjal are not tested.. Its proven that BT-Corn is damaging kidneys and liver in american continet.. this is happening after 10yrs of introduction of BT-Corn, I read an article that In andrapradesh more than 1000 Goats died after consuming BT-cotton seeds... We don't need GM food at all.

The major cost for our farmers is the pesticides its a huge burden on them and I think govt did this intentionally. The cost of pesticides went up from (1990)100RS to now more than 5000 /- can't govt these pesticide companies and produce and distribute at dead cheap price ?? It is very much possible but our Govt is slave of MNC's... We have to take control of the govt otherwise they will sell our undies without our knowlege.

Multinational funded scientists and Babus !!!
by raju chaturvedi on Jan 30, 2010 07:05 PM  | Hide replies

How can a few company-alligned scientists and bribe-taking babus decide on the health of the people and the future of agriculture in India? Let Sharad Pawar, the scientists and the babus ear Bt. brinjal. We the people do not need them. Let the farmers and cosumers decide what to grow and what to eat. We have a right over our health and well-being. This Pawar and scientists will be nowhere when we fall sick or die.

You do not have any right over your own thing including health. If you would have, you guys must have selected right person as representative rather than blaming others.

Bt brinjal safe or not
by Arun Sharma on Jan 30, 2010 06:58 PM  | Hide replies

For some it is fashionable to oppose every thing by providing incomplete information to common person. Cotton farmers suffered losses initially because thinking that since they have paid high price for cotton seeds, they would not need any insecticide spray. It still required insecticide spray, though 3 times less. As a result crop was eaten by insects. It has already been proven that Bt toxin is safe for humans in several studies. For those who are opposing Bt brinjal, DTT which is used in fields has become irrelevant. They do not like to scare people for DTT. People have forgotten when Cola companies were told that cola drinks were having DTT. DTT being used has come to water which every house hold drinks. The fact that Bt crops are going to cut down on use of insecticides is very trivial for people opposing Bt brinjal. For those who think that Bt cotton would wipe out non Bt cotton, I would like to say that farmers are not been forced to use Bt brinjal seeds. When some who use Bt brinjal seeds and find any benefit then only are under Bt brinjal cultivatio would increase. In any way Bt brinjal is not going to affect non Bt brinjal, if people keep using insecticides as they are doing now.

the approving committee and the ministers who approved the bt brinjal should be fed with the bt brinjals for 6 months before indian public is asked to eat.

Just one point.......
by Cedric Vaz on Jan 30, 2010 06:58 PM

Anything BT that is not edible should be most welcome in India. eg. BT Cotton.
But BT Brinjal is most unwelcome since scientific studies done by western countries have shown it to be harmful to lungs and kidneys which are the two vital organs of the human body.
So are we going to see BT of all other vegetables and fruits? Doesn't make sense.....
Some MNCs are only looking towards India for capital and commercial exploitation with our Agriculture Ministry hand-in-glove with them.
The health of third world countries be damned!
