by om shanti on Jan 31, 2010 05:33 PM  | Hide replies

Can any one suggest what are the benefits of eating brinjal..I think this is a vegetable without any nutritious value!

Why research is not on Peanuts,Patal,Capsicum,Spinach,Cabbage,Broccoli,Beans,Potatoes...i think these are more costly and have more food value ..

I think one can survive without eating brinjal...

When the entire Europe is standing against GM crops and products, Why we 1 billion people should bear this. India is a strong market potential. WHo heads this GEAC comittee? are they qualified enough to say somethin about approval. DO we have some animal based intervention studies? Well, India is a dumping yard, and Indians are treated as Guinea pigs or albino rats by their own leaders itself, so whats the relevance of this article, just to add on to frustration and hopelessness..?

Genetic engg can predict only next 2 generations of crop
by Abhi Bhat on Jan 31, 2010 11:27 AM  | Hide replies

Genetic engg can predict only next 2 generations of crop.
After that you are on your own. The third generation of the gm crop will be deteroriet and cause more farmer suicide. This is the fate of all past cotton farmers and rice farmers and corn farmers and conolla and potato farmers who grew bt crop.
Mnsanto is a face of shaitan just like Dow or Biocon.
No animal ever eats GM seeds. Cows and horses dont even touch GM seeds.
I am sure this is a population control method.

india's rural budget,i am told is the next biggest after defence. all the politicians, their village cronies and the babus siphon the funds. it is a common knowledge that babus find it difficult even to SPEND EASILY AVAILABLE MONEY and the budgets lapse every year. our IAS officer character portrayed in the films are great shadows of the real babus who teach the corrupt politicians the SAFE METHODS to make money and in the bargain feather their nest as well. pre 1947 INDIA was fragmented and the east india company looted us. TDOAY our politicians and the babus support all unhealthy practices for several crores of gifts. for them the indian public is of least concern. HOW MUCH MORE MONEY OUR CORRUPT POLICITCIANS AND BABUS WILL EARN? THEY MUST REALLISE THAT ONE CANNOT SPEND MONEY IN INDIA BEYOND A LIMIT AND YOU D0 NOT HAVE THE GUTS TO GO ABROAD AND SPEND YOUR ILL GOTTEN MONEY. SO WHY EARN AT THE COST OF YOUR COUNTRY. SEARCH YOUR SOUL YOU CORRUPT RASCALS.

Diversity more important.
by srikumar koyikkal on Jan 31, 2010 11:18 AM  | Hide replies

Existence depends on diversity. We should have diverse types of natural brijals and not one unitary variety. This will lead to huge money in somebodys ahnds and all others like slaves. This is slavery in another form.

BT brinjal should NOT be allowed
by wizardo id on Jan 31, 2010 11:17 AM

Monsanto is a convicted company for monopoly. hillary clinton came in specifically to convince the opposition. the politicians of USA are under monasnto's payroll. we will now see our ministers and politicians recieve kicback on the sly. what else explains hillary's special visit to politicians in the opposition ?

USA is a mess and farmers there live under the threat of the MNCs all the time. its not a rosy picture. India will be severely affected since we are an agrarian economy and totally at the mercy of non-governance, vagaries of nature and money lenders. if we add these multinationals to the mix - we have a recipe for disaster. the educated people need to revolt and safeguard the interests of the farmers.

worldover monsanto has come under flak for its poor science - its biotech and pesticides protect against its own created set of enemies and holes in its seeds. we still are barely scratching the surface of genetics and these only-money oriented companies should not pollute the nature with their franken-seeds

Bt-Brinjal eternal poison or panacea against the pepetual hunger?
by Mrinal Dasgupta on Jan 31, 2010 07:15 AM  | Hide replies

Bt Brinjal is being tried to enter India as a political-financial-economic middle-soft for the Third-World Countries. Once this flood gate is opened the rest is OPEN for eternity.

India has the worst-in-century experiments with Bt-cotton. GM-Hybrid rice or other stales sh be attempted, population should be managed with overall carrying capacity of the nation. Bt GMOs cannot increase genetic yield potential but may protect against one serious pest while there are a others as serious or nearly so in endemic areas.
Long-term residual and closed system food chain experiments are necessary.
The promoters could routinely and publicly take Bt-brinjal to meet their calorie needs through Bt-brinjal for their life!
Brinjal can be protected from Fruit & Shoot Borer with pheromone, which is not made widely available across the country? WHY?
Brinjal is practically the single host for BFSB and a gap of 3-4 weeks in a subagroecosystem instead of continuous cropping in any given sub-agroecosystem.

The promoters are not answering the questios raised by the scientists and social activists.

Prof Dasgupta,

Would it not be sensible for Indian farmers to figure out how to organically grow crops and fruits for both mass consumption and non-food commercial usage keeping in line with age old practices but tweaked for present day environment, needs and price-points? Do we not have such native science and research available to not only make us self-sustainable healthily but also help the rest of the world get out of the clutches of the unhealthy, non-organic and genetically modified food doled out but the MNCs?

Jai Hind,
Desi Bhai

Bt Brinjal
by hosur ramakrishna on Jan 30, 2010 11:35 PM

Why do we need Bt Brinjal? I am sure with over 2000 varieties there is no crisis in Brinjal production in India. The crisis is preserving and getting it onto the market for now and for our future generations.. If the government wants to release Bt Brinjal then give the consumers a choice to choose between the traditonal and Bt vairety as is the pracitce in Europe.
We are unaware of the consequences of GM crops on Human health and the enviroment. India is a biodevirsty hotspot. Do we wish to contaminate this gene pool. Have any studies been done on the impact of gene contamination . The government is relying on data presented by the bio tech companies .
Recently an influential group of US scientists warned that the consequences of contamination between GM crops and non-GM varieties will be much more serious with the next generation of GM crops. Public opinion in Britain and the rest of Europe remains sceptical on GM crops. Reports indicate that nearly all of the crops in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's database of approved genetically engineered varieties have been modified for resistance to certain insects or to tolerate applications of herbicides. None has been shown to increase intrinsic crop yields, nor drought tolerance. Traditional farming systems have demonstrated their effectiveness in raising yields and improving drought tolerance; they should receive a major share of attention as an establsihed route for increasing food production.
