Time management

The article actually represents a paradox. On one hand, we have executives dying on account of stress and on the other we read about time wastage at work. The true question that actually needs to be answered is whether it is humanly possible to be absolutely engaged in just work for a matter of 8 to 9 hours on a given day. Maybe one can do it on a given day or at the most a week, not more than that. Actually, the concept of modern office hours is still taken from the age old days of Industrial revolution where distractions were far and few and no one gave a damn about employees jumping jobs or moving on to better jobs and super specialization in work was a theoretical concept. If one reads modern work behaviour and psychology, the modern blue collar and for that matter even white collar worker, cannot sustain more than 3-4 hours of core concentrated work. I am not meaning to say that employers or managers should allow for fretting away of time on social networking site or chatting but rather than give in to the stupid thought of becoming Big Brother and snoop on employees, it is best to see how you can leverage this to drive a business goal. Example: sites like LinkedIn is a great source for skill development on matters pertinent to your job and domain. If employees get on it and focus upon groups that are relevant to their work skill, it will benefit rather than hurt the company. Modern HR managers need to get smarter about all this.

It is impossible to keep perefect 100% productivity

There is fundementally something wrong with human mind that it keeps giving perception
of there something being either better or
more efficient.

It is not required that employee apply
all their 8 hr at work. All is needed
that they meet their targets and
complete the work in stipulated
amount of time.

You are right; unless, you are a worker in an assembly line, it is impossible to concentrate full 8 hrs on work alone. It may prove counter productive infact. also, there is thin line between wasting time and consulting your collegues on office matters. This author appears to be a fool. I cannot think of a single office where every one is busy chatting on line all the time; Then it would be impossible to finish work in given time.

India Shining
So is this article
by India Shining on Jan 22, 2010 12:49 PM

This article is also penned by an author with loads of time to waste. In any work study of even the most productive activities, you find that at least 20% of the time is wasted on Non-Value Added activities. Also, people will spend some time on things like socializing. This is not wasting time, but a critical activity in today's organizations. If they do not socialize with one another, who will come and get the work done- this author?

waste of time indeed !!
by sujeet kshirsagar on Jan 22, 2010 12:35 PM

why blame any individual or any institution when our own congress government is wasting every minute to perfection.
For instance, when the inflation was soaring to all time high (and still it does brake records) our minister for agriculture was wasting time with BCCI & Cricket. And why govt taking time to control skyrocketing rates?
And our junior MEA (tharoor) is busy twittering...and wasting hell lot of time instead of making efforts to build & manage relations where it matters.
Dont ask about the rubber stamp (mrs president), I dont know what she is doing now?
Get on with it guys....why are you wasting time here...our govt does move like this..
