disposing un serviceable in govt depts.
by raman govindan on Jan 23, 2010 02:43 PM  | Hide replies

in govt. departments it is easy to buy a new asset but extremely difficult to dispose off an old and useless one. it needs more paperwork, process and decisions by appropriate authority to dispose. hence, every officer is intersted in buying only but not condemn and dispose. filth is added to the items to be maintained and occupies considerable space and effort. also one will find materials, instruments and vehicle which are in good condition will be disposed off when real action atlast takes place. lucky guys or the one who in know of status will benefit.

the officer in charge has to be conscious enough to understand the state, to dispose off. he cannot take credit for it nor higher officers take that into consideration while assessing his fitness for promotion etc.

Professional job v/s labo job
by Altaf Rahman on Jan 22, 2010 08:37 PM  | Hide replies

Actually there is no way of quantifying the loss due to net surfing. A labor job can be quantified (a certian no of units produced per 8 hr shift so if u work 7 hrs u get 7/8 of the total units) But in professional job, the work load is not even. Some times u need to preparts required for a certain review / analysis on a urgent basis. some times u have free time. During free time or less pressing time if ppl are surfing the net its OK otherwise they get monotonous and boring.

It takes greatness to sit doing nothing. Most of us who are surfing are actually escaping ourselves, we are escaping the NOW. We are escaping the HERE. We should try to sit there, accepting ourselves completely, without hope and without ego. Joy comes from within. It is the bliss of being. That is the source of this universe.

Time management
by sudeep sanyal on Jan 22, 2010 05:24 PM

The article actually represents a paradox. On one hand, we have executives dying on account of stress and on the other we read about time wastage at work. The true question that actually needs to be answered is whether it is humanly possible to be absolutely engaged in just work for a matter of 8 to 9 hours on a given day. Maybe one can do it on a given day or at the most a week, not more than that. Actually, the concept of modern office hours is still taken from the age old days of Industrial revolution where distractions were far and few and no one gave a damn about employees jumping jobs or moving on to better jobs and super specialization in work was a theoretical concept. If one reads modern work behaviour and psychology, the modern blue collar and for that matter even white collar worker, cannot sustain more than 3-4 hours of core concentrated work. I am not meaning to say that employers or managers should allow for fretting away of time on social networking site or chatting but rather than give in to the stupid thought of becoming Big Brother and snoop on employees, it is best to see how you can leverage this to drive a business goal. Example: sites like LinkedIn is a great source for skill development on matters pertinent to your job and domain. If employees get on it and focus upon groups that are relevant to their work skill, it will benefit rather than hurt the company. Modern HR managers need to get smarter about all this.
