Flawed arrguments

The feverish pitch which the gov is taking on this issue is making one suspicioius. Why is such an interest shown suddenly on Bt crops? What has changed in the last few months which warrant this push now?

In general i believe everyone is having lot of concerns & query on Bt fruites / vegetables

> Bt Vegetables wont have any seed. So even after a bumber harvest the farmers have to pay the seed company's hefty money to get the seed. Its not the case now. If its 1000 cr loss to farmers now in future it may be 5000 cr payout to these corporates just to get the seeds
> No body has done any long term study on the effect of these Bt crops. What man has learnt the hard way is whenever he tries to act smart than the nature, the nature acts with a brute force back at him

BT not safe ????
by aziz mubarki on Jan 19, 2010 08:11 PM

Are genetically modified (GM) food safe?? I sincerely doubt it...
There is a major storm break out over the safety of biotech fruits and a vegetable, with the Government of India almost, about to clear the genetically modified (GM) brinjal for commercial use. And the core of the acrimonious debate is if these GM product are safe enough for human consumption in India, where there is no labelling regime, authority for genetically modified foods which offer choice for consumers to make decisions, that if they want to consume such a product at all ...

There is no doubt that in 2002,the government allowed the commercial cultivation of genetically engineered cotton called “ BT Cotton”, which was a success story, growth wise. But then one can’t deny the facts that the further studies of BT Cotton showed that there are vital health hazards in bio engineered foods. Animals ingesting GM foods did developed complications in growth, organ development and immunity and even died at times. The farmers & workers have reported allergies which should have been properly investigated.

We have no idea why the Union Government is rushing in haste? Why the government is trusting the lab results of Maharashtra Hybrids Seed Company (Mahyco), which after all is a company working for profits. The Government should allow independent bodies capable of offering help with the tests and should not blindly follow the finding of the Genetically Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC).
