I think its an a great initiative, atleast this BT brinjal would be less harmful than the normal one, because brinjal is the only vegetable where pesticide consumption is very high, thats why the normal bringal is not so safe for humans... so bt would be a better option

Beware of Genetically Modified corps! It is the unnatural insertion of foriegn genes into food that we eat. Bt Brinjal is one such GM food where a gene to fight a certain bacteria is inserted into the brinjal seed...which will later enter the human body when we consume the same. No one can be sure of the side affects. Keep in mind that the human body plays host to a numerous quantity of benificial bacteria also and we would die of the wierdest unknown diseases if this equilibrium is disturbed. Most of the trials seem to have been done by the company that is selling the seeds. So I leave it to your judgement to see how much of a due deligence may have been done. I would also advice the readers to do a google search on Mosanto the company that manufactures this seed. I need not say any more

Folks, I would also request everyone to start using Organic products. In simple words, Organic Products are those that are produced without the use of harmful chemicals/fertilizers and hormones/antibiotics. Thus not only is it less carcinogenic, it is also environment friendly. Earlier in India, organic produce used to be very costly about 50% prices were higher. Nowadays it is only about 10-15% higher. In other words if you are spending about 10000 per month on groceries, you may end up spending an additional 1000 ruppes if you go for organic products. This is a very small insurance to pay for you and your entire family's health. Nowadays any superstore worth its sale (spencer/namdhari etc) has a organic section.

Organic products is the right direction. But the authenticity of the same has to be assured. There are many vendors who sell regular items as organic. Even some of the superstores resort to this cheating.

Jay, This was the situation couple of years back in India when the industry was unregulated. Not any more. There are certified farms of 24 letter Mantra, conscious foods etc that are 100% organic as per EU standards.

biotechnology in India. He has been felicitated with several prestigious awards including the Padma Bhushan. He is also the Supreme Court Appointed special invitee of the 30-member GEAC (Genetic Engineering Approval committee) set up by the Govt. of India. Scientist, writer, thinker, institution builder, administrator. Former and Founder Director of Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad and used to be the President of Society of Biological Chemists of India and Indian Academy of Social Sciences He has authored over 125 major scientific publications and over 400 other articles on a variety of subjects in some of the best-known publications around the world. 3. The so called “Expert Committee (EC2)” set up by the GEAC to conduct tests on BT Brinjal has lost its credibility
as many of the members are associated with GM crop development company (Monsanto). There is a corruption charge on one of them. How come we can rely on such committee whose chairman now says, “We are not sure about the safety of BT brinjal”?
Recently, the Chair of the EC2 admits in a media interview again that several tests on Bt Brinjal were not done and “without them, at this stage, we do not know whether Bt Brinjal is safe or not”. The Chairperson also says that “Genetically Engineered food products will not be equal to the non-genetically engineered food products. That's for sure. Now, how much

damage, we do not know at this stage"! This is a very serious admission indeed and the many voices of concerned citizens, scientists and activists stand vindicated with this. These views of the EC2 Chair not getting reflected in the report of this Committee shows yet again that pressure and vested interests were driving the EC2 report.

First of all you and your family has to eat the bt Brinjal for 1 year to prove that it's safe.
Secondly don't say "eminent scientists had examined the science behind" and that's enough. Health impact and issues are not confirmed by examining the science behind but by animal testing and field test for many years.

say no to GM
by vipul shah on Jan 19, 2010 08:39 PM

1. GM seeds have many harmful effects on health
GM crops are created by the unnatural insertion of foreign genes which can lead to numerous unpredictable changes that are potentially dangerous for health. Bt Brinjal has been artificially created by insertion of a bacterial gene (Bacillus thuringiensis-BT) to produce a toxin 24X7 inside the plant to target one pest—the Brinjal Fruit & Shoot Borer (it has to be noted that while many pests and diseases attack the crop, this technology is claimed as a solution to one such pest). Just as it attacks the pests and kills it, it also attacks beneficial micro organisms in the human body, thus causing irreversible damage to our immunity.

Describing the health hazards related with BT vegetables, Ramadoss [Union Health Minister of India] warned that people consuming them could experience kidney and liver problems.

2. "Internationally about 30 tests are prescribed before a country can allow GM seeds. However, India has done only 6-7 tests. Those too have been done by Monsanto itself or samples provided by the company, which is trying to push GM seeds in India," notes Dr. Pushpa Bhargava, who is:
widely regarded as the architect of modern biology and

Bt Brinjal
by Chandran Ganapathy on Jan 19, 2010 08:35 PM

Let us agree that all the persons in the news item above will be feed Bt Brinjal for a continous period of 3 months, three times a day. We will observe their health after suitably disecting all their internal organs and if found okay, then declare that Bt brinjal is safe for consumption. I request all this board posters to say 'Aye' to this suggestionn, in an overwhelming manner. Common all of you.

Statistics can be a dangerous tool in the hand of a foolish statistician.
the data and sample space selection needs a very elaborative study before defining a sample space.
be ready for Genetic pollution by 2050!!!
and these people will suggest a good fund for remedial measures.
god save them all. Just do the spectrum analysis of the salts and compounds of "it" and they will know the truth.
regards.
sorry if i am wrong and mis leading.
