Industrial development in Northern States
by Desert Fox on Jan 05, 2010 12:11 PM  | Hide replies

This must be discouraged. What will we eat then ? Already Singur land is ruined. If we have industries all over the place, there will be a food shortage.

For northern states, different approach must be innovated. High Agriculture - that will make them rich as well as increase the food supply. At worst, only a limited aread should be allowed for industrial development.

good job bihar
by sai on Jan 05, 2010 11:34 AM

I think it goes like this .
Total gdp= gdp (growth(%)/100)*gdp
=gdp(1 (11/100))=1.11gdp.If u maintain growth for 5 years it would be (1.11)^5=1.685.to measure gdp percapita growht rate subtract 2-2.5 percent population growth rate.It will be almost 9 percent growht. But this is recession time so u can expect higher growth in the future.I think it will take 5-10 years for bihar to catch up with the national average at this pace.If it is faster 17-18 percent catching up will be faster.

Argumentative Indian
Bihar's development may bring Dignity of Labor in India
by Argumentative Indian on Jan 05, 2010 11:31 AM

In India, uniquely, the poor subsidise the lifestyles of the rich. Almost all middle class Indians employ Maid Servants, an unheard of luxury in Europe and US. Most upper middle class Indians have drivers, those in Tier II Cities also have Gardners and Cooks. Hence traditionally in India, menial labor, has always been looked down upon, something to be down earlier by the lower castes and now by the lower classes (poor people). Gentlemen / ladies, don't get their hands dirty. Thus there is really no dignity of labor in India.
These services (and hence mentality) exist, not because the middle class Indian is so much richer than the middle class American or European, but rather because the poor Indian is so much poorer than his American / EU counterpart and is forced to live in sub - human conditions.

Many of these informal jobs, except probably maid servants, are performed by migrant Biharis, throughout India, whether it is WEst Bengal or Maharashtra, from drivers, to taxi drivers, rickshaw drivers, cleaners, cooks, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, casual laborers in Industry etc. etc.

With even marginally better opportunities in Bihar, many of these people may stop migrating out of Bihar, leading to a great, positive new change in the way we live and increase our respect / dignity of labor.

Developed Bihar means end of cheap labourer.
by Genda Lal on Jan 05, 2010 10:01 AM  | Hide replies

If Bihar becomes developed, there will be no cheap labourer for agriculture, construction work. One labourer will cost one thousand rupees per day.

I don't know why you guys think in terms of exploiting people? I believe everyone has got a right to live a better life. You see the difference - Kerala a lobourer gets paid Rs.250-300 whereas in Bihar it is only 80-100/-.

I am a Maharashtrian.
Biharis are very hard working people but they are unable to use their qualities since there is no opportunity in Bihar. I beleive there should be three phase programme for development. Education, Industrialisation (Not centralised at one place), Infrastructure and most importantly agriculture are the areas to be addressed.
