Its nice to have heard about Mr. Anil Agarwal's plan of setting up a world class University in India.Question is do we really need such a university,i mean cant the government present and future do something about the Universities which are already here???If only they could improve the conditions then as far as i think we can take our Universities abroad instead of getting expensive ones here :-)

Rahmatulla

Do you have any idea about the place where he wants to build this University ? Do you have any idea about how Vedanta Resources makes money?

Don't just blindly support someone just because of the "noble intention". I also have a nobel vision of building a hospital for the poor in mt city but for that should I rob the poor in some other city?

Let the governments do its job in improving the quality of the varsities run by them. No body oppose. If a philanthropist wants to do separately what is wrong in it? Let him do. Majority of the world class universities are products of philanthropists. So far as your concern whether India need it question: India is a big country. Where is the number of seats in higher education to its growing population in comparison to other developed countries. Please evaluate this aspect. Thank you.

it would be better if all the univ .activities are transparent and an independent body would look into it.its private schools and colleges which has given opprtunities to many and many missed out because of reservation policy of state govt.
let us keep our mind open to new ideas and beleive me there are no free dinners

You are correct. Businessmen should stay away from Universities. Universities are temples of learning and should be in charge of dedicated, saintly and pious people who do not need money.

This way also state economy will be benefited,is not it? When there will be large congregation of people, definitely there will be need of hotels/restaurants, picnic spots, etc. Opening varsities do not means polluting education. Exploiting the same is. We should oppose pollution, not growth. Be practical. Despite having large number of educational institutions still a large section of the society is languishing in illiteracy, is not it? There is a big scope if we work in an innovate manner. Thank you.

New University & new Idea
by adesh muttreja on Mar 06, 2009 06:47 PM  | Hide replies

I believe we should not follow west blindly.I like our education should help people to live better life.
People need to learn how to remain healthy, emotionally strong (that is just to get every thing quickly we get in to depression & spoil health).
Education should be to make people self dependent & they should learn to help needy. Social service should be part of education. means no degree without real social service.
Spirituality, yoga etc should be part of education.
If education can only help people earn money to me that makes no sense.
I believe aim of every human being is to be happy. So the basic aim of education should to be learn to live happily, healthy & should learn that each person will leave the world EMPTY HANDED SO WHY TO DO ACTS WHICH IS ARE NOT GOING WITH US.

It seems you have not gone through the entire project detail. People speak many things out of ignorance and I request you not be one of them. Do you think wherever there is large-scale congregation there is macchile bazar? No friend, this may not be like that. Let it comes up. We will see who makes it macchile bazar. Thank you.

He became a businessman because of this vision to create a great university so that a lot of Indians will benefit. He knew that if he doesn't become a businessman and earn money, then nobody will help him to achieve his dreams ;-)

for all those who cry on displacement of villages
by Sudhakar rao on Mar 06, 2009 06:43 PM  | Hide replies

Dear,
Think of the project size and the number of employment it will generate.
The so called relocated people needs to be relocated only to the peripheral of the 10000 acre land and the get employment there itself.
Infact their economy will grow. Even those people who sell their land to the University can make an agreement with the University that their son/daughter has to be given a Degree level admission into the college provided the girl / boy is eligible as per college norms.
I feel it is a win-win situation.

Mr Sudhakar

What do you mean by the so called relocated people? Please learn to respect people. Do you know how it is when people are coerced into "relocating" from their roots for the sake of "development". Tomorrow if the Govt decides to "relocate" your house for the sake of road widening will you not cry foul?

You want good road, quality education, infrastructure, etc., are not? They are not built in the air. For this some need to sacrifice for the overall benefit of the society and nation. Please check whether the local people are willingly selling their land and getting relocated or not before making such comments. Thank you.

A University to Cater 100000 students
by Sudhakar rao on Mar 06, 2009 06:36 PM

Congratulations for a Mega Plan.
However, too much crowd in one place will certainly result in reduced efficiency in optimized use of Plant, Equipment and Services.
Instead of creating top class university in terms of infrastructure, Please create the University in the aim of bringing out highly qualified and competitive product at a very cheaper cost. Which will certainly India on a long term basis.

With best wishes.

We Must Have This contd...
by soumya rout on Mar 06, 2009 06:35 PM  | Hide replies

The Universit requires 10,000 Acres of land and we must provide it to them and nearly 500 people needs to be relocated. Relocating 500 people is not a big problem if the government wants and by buiding the univeristy there is lots of opportunity for the people of Orissa to get employment in that Directly or indirectly. If people think that Mr. Agrawal is going to do some mining there, wahts the hell Govt. of the doing. The Govt. shouldbuilt one committee to look after the construction of the University and once the University is built the committee should be dissolved after submitting their final report to the Govt. there will be no problem for water as, coz Puri is situated on sore of Bay of Bengal and the Sea water can be utilized by the University to get Potable and Drinking water from it. the Natural sources like Sun, Water and Wind of Puri Beach can be itilized for generation of Power. The idea of the University looks very good and it will help people of Orissa being self dependant and Indians will be proud to have such an University...

The Govt. of Orissa and Mr. Naveen Pattanaik have a look on the idea and give your helping hand to these people to go ahead. You are son of Mr. Biju pattanaik, who has built several Universities in Orissa and The OUAT in BBSR itself.
Think like a learned fellow, not like a Wooden Toy of some other people...

India has enough universities
by Mike on Mar 06, 2009 06:26 PM  | Hide replies

India has enough universities. It would be best if Mr. Agarwal endows Research Chairs in many already existing top 20 universities. RESEARCH is the key to success of Japan, USA, Europe. India is riding a wave just because of manufacturing but without core science research India can NEVER become a global power.

You are right. But, Mr. Agarwal's objective is to provide affordable world class education to meritorious students from backward region not getting opportunity so far in present situation. Besides, building an environment not seen in India so far. This will be an innovative one. Let him do. There are many other who can pursue your path. Motivate them. Thank you.

We Must Have This
by soumya rout on Mar 06, 2009 06:26 PM  | Hide replies

The idea is great and it must get support from all sectors of the society. If there is any oppose from the public of Orissa, being a native of Orissa, I can tell this with more than 100% of confidence that this is only petty politics being played by the Politicians of Orissa. They neither want the state nor the people of the state grow educationally and financially....Hardly you can find any politician in Orissa who is a learned person, they might have some educational background they are not learned. They take politics as Business and make profit out of it whether they are in power or out of it....We have few Universities in Orissa but as a Student of those Universities when I was in my Masters I'd tried to do some research work on Oncology, but I didnt get the infrastructure ther, so I have to shelve the project and then I have to give my idea to one of the MNC in Pharma with which I'm working now. If I would have got the facility 5years back, hopefully we Indians might have our own molecule for Oncology which is a Dreaded disease. We Indians have great Ideas during our study period and as we dont get the facility to cultivate the idea, in due course of time we have to kill all those and movw with the masses....

We need such Universities not one but more than 6 in different regions of our country, to make our educated mass Inovation oriented rather than Service oriented. This will not only make people educated, but also will give opportunity to lots of people to earn.

Mr Agarwal,
Congrats for thinking about a project which will make "QUALITY" A WAY OF LIFE IN AN ENVIRONMENT OF "QUANTITY"
HOPE YOUR CAMPUS HAS INSTITUTES OF LEARNING WHICH TEACH EVERYBODY TO GIVE BACK TO SOCIETY MORE THAN WHAT YOU HAVE GOT FROM SOCIETY.
SUSTAINABLE FUTURE IS NEED OF HUMANITY.
BEST OF LUCK
