China would have forcibly taken the land
by Sharad on Mar 21, 2008 01:12 PM

If this was China, the villagers would have had no choice. The commie parties in India are hypocrites. They protest on behalf the villagers in India defending the villagers' rights, whereas when their MASTERS in CHINA do such things, they don't say anything.

I am appalled at the way people talk of development that would come because of this mega project. I would like put some facts very straight in front of the readers for having seen and worked in a steel plant for 11 years.
1) Steel plant requires big investment and also requires big time labour.Unfortunately the labor available in Orissa may not suffice. This would require bhaiyas and the one who have worked before in a steel plant.
2)Steel plants world over with any technology would always spew out tons of waste like gases, slag ,iron dust and fines every day. Disposing these waste itself is a nightmare for any steel plants.
3)The picturesque villages and agricultural land would be used for dumping these waste, resulting in the land becoming useless for cultivation.
4)Steel plants requires lot of water and in turn would also some way affect the entire district as river water would be diverted to meet these demand.
6)Steel plants world over are being shifted from the developed economies to country like India and China as the environmental rules and regulations are quite loose.
I as such am not opposed to steel plants but Steel plants should come up in region which is barren, where nothing grows . It should be an enabler to the economy and to the region rather than create suspicion among people.
POSCO being an international giant should some how soothe peoples anxiety by coming up with some new development angle and means of income to the poor villagers.

we would like to see chidambaram as security watchman & Sonia security watch woman. Centre looting every where. Common man cannot have a square meal. Prices beyond reach. jobs are only to semi educated in IT uneducated in crimes. All Government employees are corrupt, since the greediness, & prices shooted up, since politicians making money in all sence by hook or nook in lacs of crores by corruption. The voters should wish to come clean politicians, and they should punish these chidambaram's / sonia's/ caste leaders like mayawathi, ramvilas paswan / & Lallu ballu/ faction leaders like samuel raj sekar reddy CMap etc., who earnead each lacs of crores of rupees in bribes. Few years Military should be given utonomous status & give civil police under them. So law & order & corruption can be rooted out since the politicians are the main breeders. Few years we should bear pain even though it is good to clean by like above mentioned politicians to root them out as well to bring governance in order. Why chidambaram bring service tax to all sectors which is no way concerned to service & exempt the advocates from that.

People of that area and Orissa at large must realise the implications of a large steel plant coming up in that area. The mega project will not only change the industrial face of Orissa but also bring in development in many fields as offshoots.Look at the places where steel plants have come up all over the world and what changes they have brought in.People must think what they are losing now against the gains for their future generations.some people for their vested interest and political party who are interested to keep Orissa under developed must be recognised and properly dealt with.Good sense should prevail and everything can be solved by negotiations but keeping the ultimate result of giving go ahead signal to the project.A lot of foreign investors are ready to come to Orissa ,so let us show them that we are ready to extend our cooperations. And that is going to benefit us all and the state.

I am very pro-development but I do realise that you cannot kill nature for development as that will be fatal in the long run. From this account, it seems that the rural economy in this village is a thriving one. In that case, it may not make sense to actually replace it with an urban economy. Orissa is largely a poor state and if people here are getting 70000-100000 per annum, that should be good. I studied for so many years and after an expensive engineering degree, I could start with only 10000 per month in IT in NCR. Compare with this and you know that you are looking at a good village economy. Now, it IS a question as to why such a village does not have pucca houses and roads and hospitals. I can understand that the congress govt did not do anything for our villages for decades but why not houses? Is the figure of 70000-100000 per acre per year an exaggerration by Mr sahoo in order to get a better deal in his favour? Has mr sahoo a vested interest in the betel fields? That is another side of the story needing details. The govt must mediate and look at alternatives if the people are not interested.

In the first place why govt is acquiring land for a foreign private venture? Second, the alternative given is always wrong, insufficient or even nil at times. The mistrust and opposition is therefore obvious as they will rake millions by giving peanuts.

If they have to give millions and not peanuts, their products will also be more expensive - so that cannot be a good surviving stratagem. also, the govt may decide to support a foreign or any otehr private or govt venture because in the process, they will generate jobs directly and indirectly.

I have not much time to read all the details,a good negotiator should act on behalf of both so that not only 600 families but thousand and lakh of people will benefit from the project.

Thousands of Oriyas are doing "naukri" in outside states. It may come relief and may be the statrter that they can return to their land to do something for Orissa...
Please support and resolve the issues at the earliest...
