Please tell her that the population of rich is also very big in India. And simply because there are many poor people, are you saying that all the efforts and thoughts of the rest of the population should be about poverty eradication - shouldn't the well off indulge, watch sports etc. etc.

India is a poor country inhabited by rich people.old story. Now we have lot more rich/super rich and upper middle class than many countries around us. If only our politicians and beurocrats put their heart and soul into it, it is easy to change the image.

u r not a true indian or u r mad... or may be both... cant u c india growing more faster... in the next five years there will be no poverty at all.... tell ur girlfriend that india is no more a poor country.
For those ppl who ridicules for their ads in 2007 WC, this is a fitting answer. Cricketers have short careers, unlike corrupt politicains, who earn even after they are 80.They deserve all the cashes coming thru...

But what did they get for their wins???
We are still wasting money!!!!!!!!!! This will never stop. it's ok. But Please ....Sponsors should be there for all sports in which India does good. I request rediff to gather money for other sports as well. You can keep a margin and then give that money to a sport every month... Sponsor the players and atheletes personally... Any ways you people know better how to manage it.. But as our cricketers other people who compete in the bigger arena.. Like the olympics they should also get some big sponsors as well..... Because those are the games which are played in more countries which can make us more proud.... I am not taking the credit away from the cricketers.. I am also a fan of Ganguly Yuvi Pathan Zaheer etc.... But If the infrastructure is not good then we people can help it become better. And Rediff can take the responsibiltiy. We should prove that Public is not blind.
Our shooters have talent but they are short of rifles and quality bows and arrows .. We don't have enough astro turfs to maintain for hockey... Badminton, lawn tennis and TT we dont have good coach.....The atheletes don't get the money to go to good tracks outside India for training. They don't even get good Gyms..... The list will continue long... This is high time to give it back... India's economy is Booming... There can be Mutual Funds investing in sports Infrastructure.... If we can donate little every month it can give a big boost to the w

We the general public are only to blame for this sorry state of affairs with other sports and athletics. Any body gets glued to TV for other games than cricket? Now advertising agencies are not to blame since they want their advertisements to be watched. If we watch other games also, advertisers will endorse players. You know, the santosh troffy team of kerala who won the troffy this year travelled in a 2 nd class sleeper coach to and fro. Do you know they were staying in a dormitory during the tournament. The manangers of games associations are equally blame worthy because they are interested in their own welfare and not player's. Let us hope things will change foir the better. Regards

Well, we don't live in a Utopian society. Relatively simple theories of supply and demand determine most actions and decisions. Companies don't pay sportspersons for charity. They do it because they want to earn more profit. This doesn't just happen in India. In fact, Indian sportspersons are paid nothing compared to their American counterparts.
We can't grudge them the money they make. Popular sports, such as cricket in India, attract more money. The same way, soccer players in England make more money than cricketers. Football (American football) players in the US make more money than their soccer players. There are several reasons for the popularity of a sport, and usually it tends to be a cycle, where you have more money being pumped into a sport BECAUSE it is popular, helping it make even more popular, or at least sustaining its popularity.

I think the above Q is absolutely meaningless.Sportpersons the world over are well paid...Its our govt's job to take care of the poor. FIrst let them stop being corrupt. Our cricketers have come from humble backgrounds, so they deserve every bit of money. Cricket rules!
