Scott Bayman is no fool
by suresh iyer on May 22, 2007 05:56 PM

We Indians jump at any topic and show all our underbelly when not required. Scot has to prepare a report on India and give it to his headquarters and so the next guy can handle the stuff here easily. By negating what is real he has managed to stir he hornets nest and lo and behold he gets tons of pages of documentation of Indians suffering which will never end. And this documentation would have been obtained as part of a Market research report and GE would have had tp pay a good sum, now that is free, thanks to our quick respone. And moreover a topic like bribe which is a part of breathing needs no revelations.Anyway if he leaves india as an ordinary person without the fanfare then at various points till the plane takes off he will have chance to change his opinion? What say Scot ....sorry India is aint bad despite bribes...give or take as you please

We do not feel anything odd when somebody asks for bribe. I think in 14 years he got so used to corruption that he thinks that it is down.

What the hell is he talking about??? Corruption has gone down in India!!! Does he live in a dream land??

Maybe he does'nt experience corruption bcoz of his American passport, Gori Chamdi and stature. Had he been a common man, he would have known corruption exists everywhere in India and its growing.

GE has been in India for the past several decades. Its not that its a new co and does not know the tricks of the trade. If you think that Ge sales is coming down cause they are not bribing, then you are wrong. We dont have to bribe our way up and get sales unless the quality is inferior and you are worried about its sale.
Not everyione will agree to you on this.

Now an Indian replacing Scott at GE. Too bad for GE, he will make sure he eats up GE from inside like a termite.

We Indians are experts in exporting corruption. Just look at the many body shopping companies in US. They have mastered the art of corruption, faking and lying.

A white man has to certify?
by Kumar M on May 22, 2007 05:32 PM  | Hide replies

A white man has to give certificate? C'mon. The guy never understood how things are done in India. Quoting Airbus and Boeing is a joke. We have accepted corruption as a norm. What is "campaign contribution" means that's so rpevalent in USA? How different is this from bribe and corruption?

You know what??? Americans are too stupid to differentiate between certain things!!!!! They have something called "Lobbying" in US,which is nothing but legalized form of corruption by lawmakers. "Campaign Donation" is another such corrupt practice that was legalized to make it look cool. For them, its OK to take certain gifts in exchange of some favour, as long as you dont take money, thats not called corruption according to Americans.

Now the entire media will go gaa-gaa over his statement as if its complete truth and nothing but the truth. Indian PM will present it as a certification of lower corruption to the entire world bcoz its given by a GORA SAHAB.

Reality is corruption is alive and spreading its tentacles in every nook and corner of Indian society. We(Indians) should'nt become complacent thinking that corruption is now less becuase a white man said so.

Yes, we have come to accept that corruption is a norm. Corruption is still alive and kicking in all places - Central & State govt. depts, hospitals.
The public should jointly fight this - by exposing corrupt officials and parading them in public over a donkey like old days

Dear Sir,

You might not believe, we would not believe in whatever we do or have unless told to us by a foriegner. Thats the way life is. If you have accepted corruption as a norm , then you are mistaked, people like you should be boycotted. That is the reason every company cheats us and gets away with it cause they can bribe their way through and things do work unless properly bribed, Some of the products(brands) which you get in India differ in quality than thier counterparts cause we have accepted the same and never raised our voices against the same.

GE UncleSam; ugly colonial legacies...Indian corruption...
by D goel on May 22, 2007 05:28 PM

Panchkula , afternoon, 5.10 pm, Tuesday, May 22,2007.
Scott Bayman of GE CEO, India ,who worked in India for last 14yrs. at a stretch, while, going back to 'States, tells ,Mr. Aziz Haniffa in Washington DC that as of now Indian's formidable Babucracy and Inspectors' raj is considerably cured of its endemic sleaze, womanising, and cuts and under -the -counter
kick backs in most transactions involving state
imports like those in defence, and big spenders like commercial corporations as Infra-structure PSUS and States Electricity Boards (Enron) and
NHWA speedy projects. This may soothe the babucracy, but the truth is that hardly any operation related to trade and tendering of
commodities needed or exported does involve an army of hefty bribes and copious plying of Partying with call-girls , and booze, the few disclosures that do get leaked out through General Court Martials or CAG ritualistic annual reports to the Parliament that are seldom taken seriously. ATRS submitted on such reports to parliament are cursorily filed and forgotten..Lately , even the the honourable Justices of the High-courts were involved in Land Mafia scams, or other such depressing doings of a certain Justice Ramaswami of the Supreme Court who escaped Parliamentary impeachment's grillings by invoking regional antipathies under notorious PM Narsinha Rao who had bribed MPS to stay in Power in the same period. Talegi, and Harshad Mehtas suitcases had made the entire Indian State Machinery reek with vapours of infernal Hell in Nineties under Reformist Manmohanomics and
slick smoothie Chidambaram from Harvard Business School.Naturally, our ugly legacies of being flunkeys to white Masters would make our Babus flaunt such certificates from Uncle Sams a god-send talisman , to be sure..D. Goel

Yes campaign contri., jealousy and discrimination is part of American people, but to file report in police station you did not need to bribe police officer, to get tenant evicted you don%u2019t have to bribe judge or will take 20 years to evict non rent paying tenant in USA, you don%u2019t need to bribe custom officer at airport even though you don%u2019t have any thing that%u2019s taxable, the 1000 of more examples..... in india it's 99.99999% while in USA it about 5% lot of difference

Sales Tax officials and he will know what it is to get your work done. Please do not take what a foreigner has to say.For a change pl ask him to go to Bihar, orissa and a host of other states to know what is called corruption.

Corruption will stop, when we stop giving.
I dont give any money for my job done.
I was caught by a COP of driving without a proper license. Sametime he caught 4 others, he took money and let them go. But i was not ready to give him any money. He threatned me with big talks, like i have to go the court and they will fine me rs.1500 so on. But i refused to gi ve. Atlast he filed a case, i went to the court next day and paid a the fine. Rs.100. Thatz it. I better pay it to the court rather bribe.

you must be unemployed to have so much of time in hand to go to court. Most people are not so lucky. Hence COPs take advantage. We are all not fools.

this is ridiculous chandra padmanabhan. u shouldnt have posted such a nasty reply to saravanan. u think u r not a fool but thats what u think. if u look at the big picture of bribing someone so that u can go to job the next day, u r doing so much harm to the country and to make fun of someone who had the guts to stand against bribery is just beyond hope. well done saravanan, i'm proud of u.
Indians are not corrupt genetically as some of u on the board are trying to say. It is oppurtunity( or lack of) and circumstances that would decide whether one becomes corrupt or not. why then the millions of indians living outside the country in relatively bribe free countries not resorting to bribery and corruption again? have they cleansed their gene pool once they have crossed the indian boundary?
