How many know that airports like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Dabolim (Goa), Pune, etc are civil enclaves in military bases? There are serious constraints about space for passenger amenities and even for aircraft parking. Cochin used to be a civil enclave (on an island) and couldnt expand to cope with wide-bodied planes from the Gulf. So they went for a greenfield airport which was only Rs 300 crores and made money from the word Go. Now they have greenfield airports in Bangalore and Hyderabad which are spread over several thousand acres and costing a bomb. They are also miles away from human habitation and to top it off the existing "lousy" airports will have to close (just as the civil enclave in Cochin did) so that they can monopolise the air traffic. I'd like to hear the comments when passengers have to catch planes from those new airports, probably at exorbitant cost.
Cochin International Airport is the best i have seen. The only Airport in India that can handle a Airbus 380 at the moment and is situated right in the middle of serene greenary. Chennai is second i guess.

Pune is the worst.. no planning.. baggage conveyor belts are too short, only two baggage conveyors and finally only 4 planes can accomodate.. while returning from b'lore two times they put us in runway for half n hour..

Let us not look at having a Changi airport in India. Even if we build something like Changi Airport in India, it would be very hard to maintain it properly in a matter of few months or years. Even with the existing infrastructure, there is a scope for making the following improvments -
1. Clean environment, free from mosquitoes. 2. Disciplined, friendly staff. 3. Passengers using wheel chairs not being harrassed for tips by the staff. 4. Likewise, let us hope that able bodied passengers don't opt for the wheel chair service just because it is free! 5. Clean toilets preferably smelling of good fragrance rather than phenol. 6. Good public announcement system. 7. Adequate trolleys placed at strategic locations. 8. Trolleys which move only in the direction that the user exerts a push. (I seldom find trolleys that move straight). 8. Better maintenance of escalators and conveyors. 9. Better access to the taxi stand. 10. Free local call service after clearing immigration. 11. A small playing area for children.
These improvements can also be made in the existing airport building and will make passenger's life a bit easy, specially considering that passengers in India have to report 3 hours before the flight.
hello people, let me ask you all one question those who are commenting that MUMBAI AIRPORT is the BEST, did you all travelled or visited any other airports?? i think no! thats y you are commenting mumbai airport is the best. ok leave the airport, did u see the airport canteen?? the canteen there at mumbai Int. airport is like a tea stall in a Transport Bustand. Is that the standard of canteen for an International Passenger??
according to my experience, i have been to many international and domestic airports, Mumbai(both Int & Dom) Delhi(both) Chennai(Both) Bangalore(both) Cochin(Both, old domesting and new airport) Trivandrum(Both) Kozhikkode(Both). In all these airports, Cochin(operated by CIAL) is the best airport. Chennai airport is also Good. Mumbai and Delhi airports - the worst in the country! In Chennai airport, i could see a canteen over there! But see the canteen of Cochin airport. Also see the Design of airport
