US-Style salary now in India
by Umesh Vora on Jan 06, 2007 03:02 AM

I think the moral of the story is unless India is able to educate more children rapidly and with good quality education, which means more schools and colleges, there would be reverse flow out of India of services related business.

Remember, 12 to 15% annual increase when compounded would triple the salary in under 10 years!

However the PPP does not equate with the quality of food, services and infrastructure that USA and India offer as of now. I think India still has advantage for around 2/3 decades.

This is not True
by Manoj Kholia on Jan 06, 2007 02:08 AM

This is not true. There is no comparison between India salaries and US salaries. I have worked in India for 2.5 years and almost 2.5 in USA too. Saving difference is huge in India and USA. I think one can save 7-10 time more in USA per year Even if the salaries in USA are around 5 times higher Than India. India is expensive too you may end up spending 50-70% of your salary in India and save 30% which makes it small amout in rupees. But USA even if you save 40% that will comparably many times high than what you can save in India. I think thats why IT professional want to go onsite. What you can save in USA in one year that will take 5-6 years in India. No offense I love my country very much but thats reality otherwise I would love working at my hometown in India.

you can never never compare, it sounds like a harsh truth but..
by anu on Jan 06, 2007 02:07 AM

Yes, some of the indians may be paid high but at what expense, more responsibilities and that means more hours of work WHO ARE COMPETING WITH EACH OTHER VERY AGGRESSIVELY.
But in US even doctors work only 8 hours a day.(it is highly impossible to turn back a patient in India because nursing homes works all round the clock OR patients even show up infront of the house and what are they paid, is it even possible to compare work to rest ratio, NO WAY. of course humanitarian qualities come to picture, but that doesn't pay.
It is an unimaginable difference in the life style you get working for $80K per annum.
One has to prove and work hard with such a big competition to excel to get that kind of money in india but in US that is the kiind of salary most of the Indians get and think about the stress and strain of working about 10 hours a day in india and only 8 hours in US. Commuting makes u tired and what kind of time do u get to spend with the family?
I SAY, THAT IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO CONVERT DOLLAR AND RUPEES FOR COMPARISON.
Life with that kind of comparison has its own advantages and disadvantages whether you are in US or India. BOTTOM LINE- I DON'T WANT TO COMPARE.

US style salary
by Ravi on Jan 06, 2007 01:15 AM

$95000 salary for CFO in Florida, is this some kind of a joke?

CFO gets paid a minimum base of $200,000 anywhere in US, and will make atleast 20% more if in BayArea or Manhattan.

It would be a best scenario even if India attains attain 30-40% of the above figures.

In my opinion, the comparision of country should include the general infrastructure, facilities and many more... US definately provide better quality services to their citizen then india to indians.am i right?? Just one example of comparision would be how the CFO of our country can reach to his office in comparision with counterpart in US.

Not at all
by raj on Jan 02, 2007 08:52 PM

The ratio presented in this article is 'anything' over infinity. Only 0.00000000000001% of India's population are picking up this amount. If the debate is over whether 100,000 USD salary reached India,,,,I fully agree it arrived but in traces on billions of fraction. But major mass still remains below poverty line. And the average of all is still the same shit.

its the other way around actually
by joey on Jan 02, 2007 10:41 AM  | Hide replies

i think the authour hasnt an iota of reality in his views. a movie ticket in mumbaia t a multiplex costs anyway between 200 to 500 rs come sto 8 to 9$, gasoline (the most imp factor) 50rs / litre compare that to 1.88$ /3.5 litres. average electricity use in a apartment 25to 30$ with heating and ac on all time compare that to 5000rs upwards

flexi timings no ass licking the boss like they do in India ...a 150,000 house costs 780 to 840$ EMI compare that to 70 t 80lakh house attracting over 35000 rs, no fear of land mafia in usa as in India.

uncertainty of whether IT will be still reigning after 5 years in india a big question mark?? newer players emerging it pays to be where the business orginates rather than the recieving end (which is susceptible to change to any other newwer low cost country)

getting US salaries in india means end of india's competitiveness hence bad news for the techies there..wait and see the burst that is on its way

best of luck!!!

Hey, I fully agree with Joey and Arvind when u say Rs.10 lakhs in India just tell me what percent of population earns that much only some IIT/IIM guys or guys from other top instt. what is their no. maybe 1-2 lakhs. what is this no. as % of 100 crores? :)

tell me what does a guy from a B or C grade B-school or engg earn in a textile mill or core engineering company. Doctors are made to work in villages for Rs. 8000. No Infrastruc, no power, no traffic sense, crowd.. still 200 years to go that too after a dictator comes...

Mr.joey...

Competetiveness and techy development is going on very well in india..

It is easily understandable that with a pay of 10 lacs/yr in india...no matter whre u stay in the gretest metros...u'v e got a settled and comfortable life...whereas for the comparitive u.s or FOREIGN SALARY ...we have to equally spend on accommodation ,tax and their lifestyle ways..

Best option is decent salary in a very good organisation in india is far better than being an NRI away from home.

A little skwed presentation of the differences
by Syed Faruckh Aly` on Jan 02, 2007 10:01 AM  | Hide replies

The report is partly right and hence is damaging. Lets start with petrol.. the most common commodity that everyone buys. Is there a price difference? I think we in India pay more and hence I feel this single difference makes everything more expensive for the Indians.
Buy a pair of Levis, a branded purfume, for that matter any branded item and you will find that you are paying the same price(sometimes even more) as you would have paid in dollars, in the US.
Hence I feel that the Indians are being paid much less for the same and mostly greater amount of work, that they perform.
Every outsourcing company and the whole world recognises the fact !

Well if you want to compare prices do it. Petrol at an avg of $3 a galon is around Rs50 a litre; Levis jeans start at around $50 for the cheapest... Rs.2500 aprox??? A bottle of coke (half a litre) $1.5... don't even start me on perfumes. Man India is so much cheaper for the same things...

assuming a price of $3 per gallon, still the price works out to ~ Rs. 36.5 per litre. Still way below the Indian gas price.

Untrue
by amit on Jan 02, 2007 09:59 AM

Hi

This is completely untrue. I would highly appreciate if you can explain me basis for this article. In USA a tax pratice person in New York City or other metro will earn minimum $ 120,000 + 20 - 30 % bonus. If you have some of this experience looking for a job, I would certainly like to get referal bonus.

Really????
by AK on Jan 02, 2007 09:45 AM

Not sure where these numbers have come from but even going by stated numbers how is $30,000 = $52,000???? What maths is this?
Also, a key point that the author conveniently forgets - Purchasing parity in Orlando and Mumbai/Bangalore (most probably where the quoted ad jobs are) very different!
