Why all this hue and cry
by SK on May 08, 2003 09:08 AM

Why are we discussing only one specific Company? It is a quite normal practice in IT as well as other manufacturing companies to give a per-diem allowance to their employees who are posted at a place other than their base station. The allowances differ from place to place and are essentially given to cover living expenses. Mind that this only an allowance and not the salary. The salary package of these employees in their home country is negotiated and accepted by the employee at the time of joining the company. The allowance structure for the destination country is well known to the employee before accepting any onsite assignment. Its the employees choice to accept the offer or not. So there is no point in complaining that the allowances are less than bus driver or anybody else. Remember here that the bus driver gets his salary only at one place and has to pay all local taxes out of this. Whereas in case of allowances the employee is getting his normal / negotiated salary in his home country.

BT

An employee of MBT is paid 1100 pounds per month, whereas his Work Permit states that he is paid 24000 pounds per annum. I fail to see this as fair by any yard stick. To put things in perspectice, a bus driver is paid 1400 pounds + benefits.A data entry operator in councel is apid 10 pounds an hour. A rather sorry state for our so called wiz kids.

Hi,

It would be of much use here to point out that salary paid is decided taking into consideration the purchasing power of a dollar across the two countries.

If a British worker being paid in pounds and an Indian worker being paid in rupees, by the same organization, are both able to enjoy the same standard of living (i.e, being equally "compensated"), i guess one can say that it is but fair.

This exploitation is common
by Amitava on May 07, 2003 12:13 PM

A lot of software companies in India who give software services to their overseas clients by this kind of exportation of human beings exploit their employees this way. Its a reality that these employees get a paltry sum for a job that needs good expertise. Another feature of it is that sometimes the indian company gets almost equal amount per month from its client that the employee gets as allowance. This is a cause for boom in Indian software business in last 6/7 years.

Arindam, u seem to b at a good position...
by Parag on May 08, 2003 02:34 AM

What u r saying is absolutely correct. Indian professionals accept the less amount offer their employer is giving because they don't have any other option. Otherwise they are asked to put their papers i.e. they are told to leave the company. Now, do let me know if you have any nice explaination for this.

Indian S/W Professional - Body Shopping...
by SC on May 07, 2003 11:12 AM

This is not a new thing that MBT is paying its employees in India and then deputing then to UK on some very low allowance. This is some form of Body Shopping that almost all the major Indian IT companies are doing. Finally what matters to a company is clean papers in order and steady increase in profit year after year. Companies who are doing such kind of BS are least bothered about the quality of life of their employees. Not enough medical coverage, total partial service agreement, very low wage etc are the different instruments being used to fulfill the target. But one thing - all this is things are not new. Ever since the IT boom started in India, these were in use. So why this hue and cry today??? Were we slipping???

Exploitation allegations are farce!!!

One of the key reasons we Indian IT professionals are so much in demand is our low cost feature. But if we decide to ask the same cost as natives, then why will a foreign company will go through all the pains of sponsorships and visa and all to employ us.They will simply take the native workers, specially now since the native supply is high too due to lower number of jobs and increase in number of native(american.british..etc) s/w professionals.

All these British unions know that and thats why they are crying for BT to pay Indians more, because that way they can get rid of us.

An onsite engineer gets indian salary plus allowance, which is quite a good amount for us and plus we get a chance to see diffrent cultures and all,in short, an amazing opportunity. So dont trust what these British union guys say, they are the competition,

Regards
Raj
