the article is aptly titled, but the introduction says that educators need to be educated.
kindly deliberate on the topic - it is the system that needs to change, not just the educators. they are only the media who implement what the system decides.
also when a college will admit a child who scores 98% and above, where to children who 'write like a dream' but cannot score in an exam stand? when a parent feels proud that his/her ward has 'bagged' a seat in a prestigious college, 'grades' are the only issues that matter, not the knowledge or how one acquired the score (for all, the student might have copied and got excellent grades).
being an educator myself, i can relate to the limitations i have while 'completing the syllabus' and 'preparing a child for the exam'.

Education in Indian schools and colleges.

What the author brings out is the sad truth. Among the teachers the effort is only to complete the syllabus as soon as possible and then keep doing mock tests for the board exams.
It is highly debatable if any of the teachers have any aptitude- even a liking for the subject they teach. Consequently how can any of the students get any inspiration or liking for the subject?
I was lucky to have a physics teacher who could make the subject so interesting that none in the class heard the bell for the end of the class. It is only when the next teacher came to the door that we realized the class was over.
I would dearly like to know if any of todays students can quote a similar experience.
In a highly rated Chinmaya vidyalaya school at Hyderabad, my daughter in class 8th got poor marks in a subject .When we checked, the teacher told my daughter that unless she answers exactly verbatim as in the notes of the teacher, the students will not get good marks. Certainly not if own words were used No matter the answer is appropriate to the question.
Even my son in 11 th and 12th in Dubai had a similar experience at one of the famous schools
In fact I had to teach them science subjects which I have forgotten ages ago.
Even the CBSE books that we could get - school prescribed ones- were pathetic. I challenge anybody who can study those books and understand any subject at all.
Some of them would explain the concept with hindi words in parenthesis like motapa for obesity. This in English sc

No doubt in our management schools (even elite) what is taught is that how you will manipulate to get good paying jobs & further how to manage it.Some time I feel that what IIM/IITs have contributed towards India's prosperity. Not much rather and those who have emerged from these instituions like Kejriwals, they are drag on our society yet he is fromm IIT(Kharagpur).Rather those who are Diplomaholders/It is ,it is they who have spread prosperity by providing employment to others. IIT/IIM either are glorified white collared servants(unconnected with society) or they go USA. Before closing, I'll like to mention that these so called pvt. unvarsities are producing Literate Illitrates & level of school education is so low in U.P. & other states' school that school students coming out from these Run of mill type institutions even can't pronounce properly & thus they don't gain any confidence.

Politics, Poor Recruitment and Easy Going Attitude

Interference from the politicians, Absence of youth in the policy making, Biased and Rigged system of recruitment, Easy going attitude of the teachers caused by their inability to retain a low achiever are major reasons. Who cares about the teacher and the problem of the teacher?

Teaching like nursing has been a noble profession. It meant sacrifice, dedication and sincerity. The teacher is meant to be an example to his students. This remains so, still in some institutions like the PamKrishna Institution schools and schools run by some Chtistian missionaries. But in most cases, the teacher today is greedy, indisciplined and corrupt. He looks to fill his coffers by spending his time in things other than teaching in class. He runs coching classes sometimes even during school time, takes tutions, sells notes and probable examination questions and lures students with easy to pass examination books. With the result the student is simply deprived of the opportunity to learn, know and discover the wonders of Nature. Those meritorious and talented therefore easily do well and escape to the advanced countries where education, teaching and research flourish. This brain drain will continue until this greed and corruption is curbed for which there is little hope since corruption has spread its fangs far and wide.

tragedy of indian education system
by prabhakar on May 16, 2016 08:15 PM  | Hide replies

True, our education system doesn't allow our students to gain command either on languages or subjects taught mainly because the concentration of students for last 10 years is on how to achieve maximum percentage in final exam only to get admission into next desired course and not acquiring knowledge of the subjects. That's why present generation of students have become Race horses mainly because the reservation policy of Gifts both in states & center too as vote catching tactics least bothering about the merit making forward castes like exam preparation machines( as highly meritorious candidates are very high whereas the seats both in professional courses& sciences too.Forward caste students started feeling cursed to have borne in their upper castes see in far less meritorious getting admissions in preference to them.JeediguntaGoa

The problem is that in order to enforce the Caste and an absolutely authoritarian social system the Indian society enforced absence of freedom of thought.

Freedom of thought is very rare in India. Indians need exposure to freedom of thought. It is next to impossible to generate through change of style of teaching. Views of and contact with people who think freely might be useful.

One way to introduce it might be to send children off to a developed country at a very young age, say 4 years. Ten years of stay there might give them some experience of freedom of thought.

Another method is to make videos of life in western society, its schools and colleges, and show in India. Depending on how deep the coverage is, it might be a cheaper way of exposing Indians to the freedom of thought.
