THE BEST PART OF THIS ARTICLE WHICH I HOPE MAKES REPEATED ROUNDS - You were part of the Justice Verma committee that made crucial recommendations on the law regarding rape in India. Can you share the experience with us?

The Justice Verma committee report, compiled in January 2013, comprised of 600 pages.

We made very strong recommendations. But the government did not take all our recommendations; they rejected some, changed some.

We made recommendations to change the Representation of People's Act.

Our argument was: how can you have MLAs and MPs who have committed sexual assault becoming our leaders and being part of the Constitution? We wanted them to resign, but that did not happen.

However, they (the government) did consider the issue of 'stalking'. Earlier, a man could follow a girl and the girl could do nothing about it. Today, a woman can address this as harassment, thus preventing instances of abuse, rape and acid attacks.

Inheritance, not dowry
by Wilcox on Jun 29, 2015 02:28 PM

This could be the game changer. If a couple has a boy and a girl, the boy gets everything what the parents have, but girl is given a raw deal and parents expect some guy who could their daughter for free.

Yes, inheritance must be demanded, but providing level field, the whenever the division is made, should take care of the parents spending on the education, marriage etc. of each of the offspring and the projected value of the expenditure made on each, at the time of dividing the inherited assertsproperty/assets

Hindu Succession Act 1956 as amended in 2005
by Jagdish Dubey on Jun 20, 2015 12:25 PM  | Hide replies

Clearly provides that intestate parental immovable property will not only be divided EQUALLY among all the legal heirs and successors viz. spouse, brothers and sister but women can also demand and sue for partition. This is being defeated by the brothers emotionally blackmailing sisters to relinquish their share simply by family settlement. It is important therefore that tthe law should be further amended asap to make any such settlemt or relinquishment void except where it is done for due monetary consideration and through a registered relinquishment deed.
Also the Women's Reservation Act which has already been passed by RS three years ago be immediately passed by the LS and then by all the assemblies.
Women participation in the labor force be increased from 25% to 70% as in China and developed countries.

Why only inheritance?
by Shyam Sunder on Jun 19, 2015 04:31 PM  | Hide replies

Why do only demand money - dowry or inheritance? Why not the responsibility to equally take care of the parents? The moment a lady is married, she considers her husband's house as her own and grows it. If her parents' money is inherited by her, then the parental family property is getting decreased; in case sons inherit the property, the property of the family grows or atleast remains steady. Why should the parental property be drifted to an entirely different family? Let the lady first stop shifting to her husband's house on marriage or let her not change her surname. When somebody asks about her family, she should take her parents' names instead of in-laws' names. When the entire culture remain the same, why only change it for financial benefits?

DOMESTIC VOILENCE IS ALWAYS AIDED, ABETTED AND PERPETUATED BY MOTHER IN LAW AND SISTER IN LAW. THERE MUST BE CHANGE OF MIND SET AMONG WOMEN WHO ARE MOTHERS TO SON AND SISTERS TO BROTHER. NO LAW IS REQUIRED AND THIS WILL BRING EVERY CULPRIT OF DOMESTIC VOILENCE TO BOOK.

True Women should have equal rights and responsibility towards parents and marriage should not be used as weapon to deprive them of their share in parental property.

If there are no buyers, then there will be no sellers! Stop buying grooms, this will automatically stop. May be you will remain unmarried for a lifetime; but the sacrifice is worth it. The issue is a simple one of demand and supply.
