Namma Chennai singara Chennai may be a good PR exercise but to rate Chennai among the places to be visited is bit far fetched. It is not the weather but the narrow unkempt roads people with no civic sense, fleecing auto fellows are enough for keeping people away.Chennai is not what it used to be say 50 years ago rich in legacies till film people took over the governance.Every thing is filmy and filthy
Chennai has been the most visited city in India by foreign tourists (since 2008),[1] overtaking New Delhi and Mumbai with visitors to heritage sites in Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram and medical tourists making up the largest numbers. In 2011, Chennai was ranked 41st in global top 100 city destination ranking, with 3,174,500 tourists, a 14 percent increase from 2010,[2] This is up from 650,000 tourists in 2007, when Chennai was the third most visited city in India by foreigners ranked after Delhi and Mumbai. Tourists from USA, UK, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore had visited the city in 2007.[3]
About 8,30,620 domestic tourists arrived in Chennai in March 2011, in addition to 29,558 tourists who visited Mamallapuram.
Is lonely Planet crazy?.. Chennai is an uninhabitable village.. quite simple the worst city in India..worst infra, politics, film industry.. its an overgrown slum.. Government should consider removing it form metros list..visit Bangalore or hyderbad rather
if you visit Chennai dont forget to eat Biriyani and Paya.. special taste..

The smell part is true. Chennai vasis may not know and they may get offended if mentioned.
Because there is a open ditch that runs in and through the city.
Once a famous canal perhaps but now a breeding ground for mosquitoes and that indescribable stench.
But if one is traveling in a car (aircon'd) then stench part can be managed but why it should be there, is a question mostly will draw a blank than a sensible reply.

Every city has some positives and negatives. Some have more. At the end, any city in India is our own. So please travel, enjoy and re-live.
Guys this not a top ten list or something but a suggestive list by the author to visit Chennai. To visit it or not is up to you. In a ranking list, I will surely rate Chennai in the top 25 but as an Indian I need to be unbaised and agree that there are many Indian cities that deserve to be better.
