Let us be aware of the world around us

While there are millions of people who struggle to get a meal and starve to death, there are tens of thousands who stuff themselves with "nutritious" food including diet supplements so that they can pursue their "passion" like running for hours to get a thrill or shaping their bodies and strutting around. Imagine if we could donate part of that food ...

You are not getting the point. The point is about a person wasting nutritious food on non productive, aimless activity. Even here, the individual is not the problem. All of us hanging around and celebrating this useless activity are the problem.

A person spending their own time on marathon is not wasteful as it is their free choice and what they feel like doing. Freedom of individual is starting point for progress of society. Tradition of lack of freedom keeps India backward.

Indians need freedom to think and act on their own without control of others. Lasting supply of food is not possible without freedom first. Population can not be reduced to small numbers without freedom of individuals to decide on whether to have children. Without freedom permanent dependence on others happens. Getting help as refugees is not real progress.

Why don't the politicians to donate some of their thousands of crores to the poor and let ordinary citizens do their own thing. If everybody starts doing everything there will be chaos like the AAP party. That's why systems have been put in place by mankind, otherwise there will be total anarchy.

waste of time

If she had spent the time helping others around her instead of aimlessly running, she could have made so much of a difference. However, in that case rediff would not have covered her....

One way for her to involve herself in productive transformational activity would be to get involved in the Swach Bharat program (no, I am not a Modi fan). I have a feeling that Shibani will definitely agree if she reads this whereas you Mr Sreedhar will not.

Swachh Bharat is not as innocent as it sounds. Unclean surroundings are class territory markers with a class protective effect in Indian society, especially in urban areas.

Indian town planning and urban architecture standards are based on Western model of reserving all urban land for upper classes, who have rights and can afford built housing. No Indian town plan contains provision for settlers and slum dwellers. No Indian architect even knows how to provide space for urban slums while developing the town Master Plans. These non citizens have no effective right to live in India, but have about 60 percent of the voting right.

Swachh Bharat is similar to illegal arson and burning alive of slum dwellers which is carried out when Indian developers and land sharks want to commercially develop land in urban slums. It is a clever cost effective device to get rid of physical possession of lower classes on that area.

Instead of Swachh Bharat it would be better to have something like "be friends with unclean Indians" or "Spend a week living with an Indian slum dweller" or some such thing.

Removing social class separation is good only if it is in the right direction, not if it reinforces domination of higher class over lower, as Swachh Bharat does.

It is social engineering and propaganda with ulterior motive. That is why urban intelligentsia, middle class climbers, and other hypocrites of India take to it like fish to water.

72 km is something for which you have to push your body to extreme limits. I know this because I can barely run 1 km on my gym machine. Shibani you must be a proud girl . Keep the spirit going..

what's your grouse? her life, her money, her time, her choice - and she's not hurting anyone. she's probably more aware of the world around her and more likely to do something positive after her run than spread negativity..

to each his/her own. if you feel running is non productive, then you must be killing yourself while commenting on such articles, or wait is that productive? Or does that feed the poor?
