TIP in poor European cultuar
by ashu gupta on Nov 23, 2015 12:18 PM

TIP had started from European market because chafe & delivery persons was generaly same (due to less population) and when our rich Indians visit Europe , they influence with the way European do and for the show-off they start in India also.
but need to understand, there is no Service Tax and not so many other taxes # Delivery person & chafe is different, no shortage of human in India # They take TIP once they deliver very well, otherwise they politly refuse not like India.

Should one tip even if the service is unsatisfactory? Can I ask for a refund for bad service when a service charge is included in the bill?

TIP

First let us understand the meaning some body made for TIP (TO INSURE PROPER SERVICE ) In US TIP is mentioned in the BIll it-self with different proportionate and you are compelled to pay . Even a Taxi driver ask for the tip which is some thing new to me . But in certain countries like Germany i heard that TIP is considered as a insulting to the waiter and is not accepted . If we consider it comercially the cost of the food is already calculated with the hefty profit margins which hotel owner is earning and on the top of it the hotel owner ispaying less to the employee and extracting more money from the customer under the Humanity ground . It is just a black-mailing of the customer under hunmanatarian ground . It is the duty of hotel owner to see that his employees are well paid and TIP should not be compulsory to the customer . It should be at will . Again commercially if we pay 10% TIP then there are many businesses which are working on just 10% profit margins so here we go to the Hotel to generate and addup more 10 % profits to the account of Hotel owner because he is paying less to his employees ,which is incorrect from customer point of view . This doesnt mean that i am against the TIP giving to the waiter but there should be some ground reality while we shed out the money from our pocket . Under such circumstances if every service industry started applying TIPS to the services they provide then what will happen ??

Bribe is bribe as the theft is theft whether it is big or small. Tip is a type of bribe (in today era) normally to attract the attention of waiter towards you during your second round of visit or sometimes to fulfill your wrong / unethical requirements. Earlier, it was being paid when you were pleased with server service Now, it has been a social funda otherwise generally server will not serve you in a good way. So, the restaurant / hotel owner should come ahead a step and provide them adequate salary and the tip should be left on the customer discretion.

its simple if one works in a restaurant
by brian crasto on Feb 22, 2014 09:30 PM

One should have an all round experience. I have been working for a fine dining restaurant for 2 years. I have seen most of the guest are not even well versed with the menu or the drinks. The host should simply ask his guest who drinks or food he prefers. The restaurant staff knows their guests in and out. The moment the guest comes in he is worth on not what he orders but how much he tips. I tip generously atleast 7 to 10%. The waiter does not bother on what I order

Now a days most restaurants have started with the new concept of SERVICE CHARGE - 10%. so even if u like or not u hav to pay that 10% as the services offered.
