who comes up with these stup*d social norms...the waiter is paid to serve...so why d u need to tip him...do u tip everyone who serves otherwise...for e.x what about tip to auto drivers, postmen, gatekeeper etc. etc..... we are just d**b followers of western idiosyncrasies

That was very harsh, my friend, but agreeable to some extent. Even if "services" mean something, there are subtleties involved that may exact a tip: waiter suggesting something good (bcos he knows the chef's culinary capabilities), or an Auto driver who drops you safe and asks meter charges, even though you are drunk and way beyond redemption... S**t happens but we need to be flexible: there's nothing that can be taken for granted. Ever had a garbage crisis yet? if not, you live in utopia
Though it is out of context of this topic, since ordering is also talked about, I would like add a small tip for the family while ordering.
First ask the child and children to give their orders. If it is something OK with you, Order first on behalf of the child ( whatever age may be) or ask the child to order or tell the waiter, this is for my child and then proceed with others orders ( may be here Ladies first - daughter, other ladies, wife, other gentleman and self ). Discuss the order and make a combination order and tell it together.
Although one is supposed to know the contents of this already, still we come across characters who act fresh in spite of their age and experience. It also certainly helps youngsters starting it out in their corporate life.
I would like to add just one more line that those sitting at the table and "ordering" should remember the waiter is also a human being who deserves courtesies. The problem is easy if we imagine one of our own child is waiting at the Table as a young man/woman starting it out in his/her career!
I am a huge fan of Vir Sanghvi, and his foodie write-ups really makes my mouth water.
Wow. This stuff is really important. Do you tip 12% or 15%? Wave, don't shout. Tip, don't run away like Vir. Use their names, don't hey hey them. Thank you for your wisdom, Vir.
What happens if someone farts in the group? Vir, please share your personal experience.
The article would have been of better value if it talked about table manners and usage of correct cutleries, particularly in a 3 or 5 star hotel. Often it is very confusing.
Why doesn't our media push the govt. for stabilising prices of vegetable, fruits, foods etc.? That's the most sensitive & nagging issue we common junta face. When simple things like Onions & Potatoes touch 100 Rs. mark, who the f cares 'bout going to restaurants & dining with tarts?
