Anti tobacco lobbying is more stronger and vicious than all other lobbies put together.
If you walked down any indian road at random, during rush traffic hour, you would have breathed in and out volatile organic compounds and Carbon monoxide which is far more toxic and poisonous one packet Tar and Nicotine,
Life anyway screws you inside out and upside down then why not have a smoke and get screwed?

Very good article Rediff. I was a smoker for 15 years and for the last 3 years i would have tried around 100 times to quit but failed but I didnt give up trying and now it's 7 months and I've not taken a single Puff. Just came back from a week long vacation from Goa but didnt smoke there as well. Feeling good after reading this article that I'm also one amongst those million non-smokers now.... Friends who smoke - please quit and experience the benefits yourself.

Wish you good luck, friend. i am sure you will find a way at least you are not in denial. For one of my friend, he started doing Vipassana meditation and the cravings of alcohol and smoking automatically disappeared. He said it was gradual after that but happened without even he realizing it. Six months later we were all surprised that he stopped as he was the one in our group who was the chain smoker. I am sure other meditation techniques or other ways may help. One other friend stopped after his 6 year old son told him to stop. He had tremendous will power though because we all know it is not an easy job once you are hooked on to it.

HELP PART 1
The easy thing to say would be "It depends on you" but like it or not, it is true!
Before quitting do a complete analysis of your habit!
Start by making a completely honest assessment of your dependence on this vice!
Ask yourself questions like what do I get from smoking? What need does smoking satisfy? What smoking makes you feel like?
Once you know the primary reason, you can work towards a solution that will help you quit!
It may sound absurd but not all smokers smoke because they are addicted to tobacco or nicotine!
A majority of smokers are addicted to the nicotine but a good number are addicted because of the psychological aspects of smoking like gaining self-confidence, filling some emotional gap and so on.
Smokers need to understand that smoking has a direct relation to the reward-motivated behavior controlling neurotransmitters like Dopamine.
You smoke because you feel rewarded by it!
If you can find a way to cheat this neurotransmitter, you are half way there!
The most important fact to remember about quitting is to NEVER try to quit cold turkey i.e. all of a sudden.
You can try this if you are a shining example of self-control.
One way of gradually cutting down is by knowing how many cigarettes or bidis you smoke each day and at what intervals.
For example if you smoke 10 in a 10 hour period, start by cutting down on 1 or 2.
Yes, your cravings will be bad but tricking your neurotransmitter into waiting helps you take the fir

HELP PART 2
Carry on with this reduction for some time, till the reduced number becomes your new normal.
Now reduce the new number by another 1 or 2.
Remember to engage in some alternate reward motivating activity when you are cutting down.
Another thing you can do is use guilt. Feel guilty about smoking, about causing harm to your health, about the consequences it would have on your loved ones and so on.
If you smoke because of peer pressure, change your peers! Yes, it is easier said than done but nobody is worth dying for so miserably or painfully!
Another big thing to remember is the possibility of being depressed while and after quitting. Yoga, meditation, participating in new activities can help you overcome this effect of quitting.
Sadly, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to quitting. Some do it all by themselves and some need all the help they can get.
Fortunately, you are your own best bet in this task i.e. if you remain honest and committed to quitting, you will be able to quit ultimately.
The biggest thing to remember is to win over the situation that made you smoke the first time and what draws you to smoking!

Two friends of stopped smoking overnight and have never touched a cigarette since then, But that needs a very special will power and self discipline of extra ordinary caliber, Not every one has it. Still every one can quit after all it is only a habit. Start with by counting up to ten slowly as soon as you have a craving for a cigarette, then take a cigarette and cut off 1/4 inch off it and throw away and smoke do this for a week, then increase your counting to 20 and cut off 3/8 of from the end and so on, by end of the month you should have increased the time between your smoking and also a shorter cigarette. Also try taking fewer puffs of the cigarette, It will take time but your body will soon learn and adjust to craving accordingly. And the biggest challenge of all, LEAN TO SAY NO WHEN A CIGARETTE IS OFFERED TO YOU, also try traveling in No smoking and use No smoking areas. Stand away from smokers. Tough but can be done It all depend on you. If your taste of food changes and you can smell fresh air then you are on the way to quitting.

Is smoking more dangerous than alcohols and drugs. Both these habits de story the entire family where as smoking impacts only the single individual. Look at the recent incidents of killings of girls of all age group under the influence of drugs /alcohols where as a smoker won't do that under the influence of a hard smoke. I am a chronic asthmatic and I get good relief w hen I take a couple of puffs of my favourite brand of classic.this is because of the nicotine helps the bronchial cord to have a better breath.alcohol wipes out the entire family and there is a huge financial strain as well. Let the rediffmail and social media discuss this rather than. Wasting time on individual incidents. Nair from Kerala

You are right Mr. Nair... People say' smoking kills'. But more than smoking Road Accidents and Dowry killings are rampant killers.
Concentrate on Alcoholic and drug affected areas where kills are more and pathetic.

All smokers tend to close their eyes towards the reality and try to justify their smoking by stating illogical arguments as above. Alcohol is also equally bad, but that doesn't mean smoking is good. This article is serves it's purpose by making people aware about dangers of smoking. It's your life and it's your choice, what you do with your life, but there's nothing wrong in the article.
I smoke 30 'Rothman' cigeratte a day. That is 2 packets. I am 40 now. No ailment of any sort. Not even sleeplessness. Good apetite and drinks good brands in the evenings.
If you have good food and drink, there will be no effect of smoking.
I doubt whether 'Rediff' will publish this or not..

Just read what's stated on the cigarette packet. If you don't trust rediff it's OK, but you must believe the cigarette manufacturers at least.
