Accept English but remove Hindi
by venkatesh kannan on Mar 23, 2013 07:15 PM

Why single out Hindi alone from the list. All the candidates should be allowed to write only in English. why give hindi people alone advantage when you refuse to other regional languages

UPSC's decision on mains exam pattern is certainly a progressive step. Politicians are not backing it because they are doing vote bank politics. A person who takes a regional language as his optional will be corrected by a person from that region only, which will give that candidate an undue advantage. Basic english is necessary for an IAS officer at least to comprehend various files that he will come across. Excellent step by UPSC. When you have 13.000 odd people writing mains exam, finding 25 people for a particular regional language is certainly not difficult.

It really doesnt matter. Whether the IAS/IPS/IFS officers clear their exams in english or in their mother tongue, they will have their hands tied down by the politics of this great country, whihc has only 1 language - The Language of Violence (and we have Mahatma as our Father of the nation who preached Non-Violence)

upsc new exam format
by sudhir mohan on Mar 18, 2013 05:41 PM  | Hide replies

The proposals mooted by the government reflect the strong elitist tendencies of the present clique of the IAS lobby and the illiterate, weak ministers who do not have the courage and wits to counter the bureaucrats.
But, the fact also remains that inspite of multi language exams for so many years, one can never see an IAS who is not proficient in english or who does not like to speak in english when in office. Then there is the issue of posting-- a person may be posted anywhere in india, irrespective of the language he is proficient in, which shows language is not important or that english is necessary.

The issue is also that why should proficiency in written language be important? Are the officers going to write essays while manging the law and order in districts? I am reminded of a book by D F Karaka, who wrote that one had to write a poem in latin/greek in the ICS exam. And those people became the founders of our civil services!

Paradox
Re: upsc new exam format

Maybe you are not aware of how tonnes of pages are added to files daily by our IAS officers. Suppose a person approaches an IAS officer for an SEZ licence and he is not eligible. It is the creativity of the clerks and the IAS official that helps create a file that justifies the licence and in the process get a neat bribe from the applicant. Tomorrow even if the applicant is caught red handed for an SEZ scam, the IAS officer and his clerk will never be tried for that creative work. My boss had gifted a Opel Corsa to an IRS officer in SEZ Kandla for a licence in 1999.

UPSC LANGUAGE ISSUE
by PANKAJ CHAVAN on Mar 18, 2013 05:33 PM  | Hide replies

I suggest that the UPSC exams should be only in Regional Language, because:
1. It has the administrative quality as everybody knows regional language
2. It is not very tough to learn in regional language
3. Regional language culture is the only linking language for the diversified Indian citizens.

How Does an Indian Officer Posted in German Consulate Handle People in case he has written Exam in Marathi?

Let us consider a Case a Punjabi Immigrant in Germany comes to him in the Indian Embassy will he come and plead in Hindi or English or go to Raj Thakrey for tution and then speak in Marathi????

In short you are a fool promoting regional Language

Boss this is all Vote Bank Politics and no one is going to gain.

India needs a common language, Embrace Hindi or English just like China has chinese and Germany has German, Our IFS officers cant have marathi, bhojpuri and malayalam and Tamil

Where was the english when India was being ruled by kingdoms.
by Shashidhara s on Mar 18, 2013 05:32 PM

Where was the english when indian subcontinet was being ruled by different kigdoms which were belongs to so may religions and customs. It is very unfortunate that there is no rule is made to have the minimum education to become the Prime minister, chief ministers , ministers, for any other law makers and the same people are decided to put conditions to become officers for ordinary citizens. This is unfair and it is a system conspirancy to avoid the rural/backward/dalits to have burecrautic powers.

It MUST be in English only because all the rules, acts, laws etc. in India are framed in English only by the IAS officers who take these exams. So they have to be proficient in English.

Need not to learn english. Are Chinese good in english? Are Japaneese good in elglish? You take americans only are they good in grammtic english. This is a conspirancy by the high class people to avoid the rural/backward/dalits to have power in governments. So that only high class people can rule india. This is nothing but sort of a backdoor entry of british people.
